if you push ##778# into the dialer, it should give a "refurbished" yes or no box and a date if it was refurbished

On the dial pad, dial ##786#
You should get an EPST window right when you press the last # The 5th line should show the refurbishment status, and the next line will show the date refurbished, if available. EDIT: Wow. It took me 10 minutes to write a response. FAIL

just for future reference- if it comes in a new box, its a new phone... if it comes in a little white box in bubble wrap and no battery, its a refurb
