calendar alerts not functioning (semi fix)

I am currently experiencing problems with my calendar alerts.

I set an appointment with an alarm and it does not ring. for example an apt starting at 5pm ending at 6pm with alarm and alarm notification for programs on will NOT sound and at 6pm the apt will become grey due to it ending.

the only solution I have found is by syncing my phone and all of the past appointments that did not ring, but completed(ie. turned grey on my calendar) pop up as alarms in outlook as if they were never dismissed.

After completing this operation the next couple of days to as little as a half a day the alarms within the calendar function normally until they stop and I have to sync again. this wouldn't be a problem except sometimes the fix only lasts half a day and I miss alarms.

I am not running a custom rom however the phone was unlocked as I WAS going to run a custom rom and decided not too.
