Guidelines for prolonging Li-ion battery life
  • Like many rechargeable batteries, lithium-ion batteries should be charged early and often. However, if they are not used for a long time, they should be brought to a charge level of around 40%–60%
  • Lithium-ion batteries should not be frequently fully discharged and recharged ("deep-cycled"), but this may be necessary after about every 30th recharge to recalibrate any electronic charge monitor (e.g. a battery meter). This allows the monitoring electronics to more accurately estimate battery charge.[25]
  • Li-ion batteries should never be depleted to below their minimum voltage, 2.4 V to 3.0 V per cell.
  • Li-ion batteries should be kept cool. Ideally they are stored in a refrigerator. Aging will take its toll much faster at high temperatures. The high temperatures found in cars cause lithium-ion batteries to degrade rapidly.
  • Li-ion batteries should not be frozen [43] (most lithium-ion battery electrolytes freeze at approximately −40 °C; however, this is much colder than the lowest temperature reached by household freezers).
  • Li-ion batteries should be bought only when needed, because the aging process begins as soon as the battery is manufactured.[25]
  • When using a notebook computer running from fixed line power over extended periods, consider removing the battery[44] and storing it in a cool place so that it is not affected by the heat produced by the computer.
I fly electric model helicopters and I follow the rules for those batteries which pretty much match up with the above. In that hobby, battery care is critical as they are high end batteries and can be very dangerous if treated improperly.

As far as draining a battery completly. Even if that was the proper way to treat the pack, that's not always a viable option. I have a 13 hour day. 2 hour commute, 9 hour day, 2 hour return commute. I need to charge during the day so I can make it home. If I let it drain, I'd be stuck half way home.

Re: HELP My phone battery discharges real fast!

I can tell you this. If you are looking for longest battery life, go with the e-rice kitchen. You may not be getting latest and greatest of apps, but I have tried all the ROMS on this site and e-rice is still the most solid for me. But more importantly, my battery lasts more than twice as long as any of the other ROMS. I don't know how he did it... but he did. I can go a whole day and a half without needing to charge. I use direct push (every 15 minutes) and a moderate amout of texting... plus I play a game or two on it every day. Seriously, I dont need to charge but once every 30 hours or so.

Anyway, I'm not saying that your advise is wrong, because I don't let my battery die 100% before charging, and sometimes I can barely make it through the day with my Seidio extended battery AND Juggalo's rom, AND the Telus radio upgrade AND other reg tweaks. So yeah, you could be right. That might be your answer OP.

Btw, if you start discharging and charging at 100% even though the battery is not new anymore, will that help its life?
Yes, you are correct. The method I described is called deep sycling. Yes.

Yes, if you start doing it now then you can fix it. It may take a couple weeks of full charge then full discharge.

I guess also, to clarify my point I shouldnt say let the battery die 100%, more like 95%

Although someone may say something to the contraty and have results to prove it this is guidance from HTC directly and is also stated in the manual and an insert. I dont have with me but will quote it when I get home.

BTW: I have 5 batteries and they all get superioer life with any ROM I run. I deep cycled each battery for the first week of usage. I really think there is a lot to be said about deep cycling when you first get them.

I charge my own phone about once every 36 hours on my ROM's.

so what you're saying is run the battery down to 5% or 10% then charge it. do that for first week and battery will last longer in the future? that's kinda what i'm doing now and just wanna know i get the process right to get max life outta my battery. also, do for one week or 2?

I would say a week is enough. The HTC battery insert said on my Pro that the battery will give the best results after a few charge discharge cycles. To me that means about a week.

Although what I posted may be against popular belief and what others have posted I can assure that I have 5 batteries that I did this with. Each batter will get me 36 hours running my own ROM's.

Try my method. Post your results in a week. If the battery does not get better I will send you one of mine. For real.

ok, i'll trust in you! this is a new battery. so um..for a old battery. i can do the same? i have another phone with a week old battery that's been charged whenever it gets to like 30-40 percent. so maybe i should discharge down to 5-10% then charge again for a week to let it relearn? is that right?

Yes but let me clarify one thing....

You should not do this forever, just during a break in period or to recondition the battery.

yes i understand that. so i'd have to do the other battery for about a week also. and won't have to do this recalibration until maybe months later or when the battery seems to be draining fast. i understand. and with your guarantee, who can beat that!=D>
