USB Device Not Recognized

Hi guys,

Searched quite a bit and didn't find an answer. I want to transfer files to my TP so I grabbed a USB cable here at work and plugged it into my Vista machine. When I do I get "USB Device Not Recognized. One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and windows does not recognize it."

So, I tried the next computer... same thing. Is there a specific driver I need to be able to transfer files or images without activesync?

Darren

Re: USB Device Not Recognized

I have Vista 64-bit Ultimate. I didn't need to install anything for it to recognize and run my TP.

1) Are you at Sp1?
2) Have you run the CD that came with the phone? I had to do this in XP.

My guess is that one or the other will straighten you right out. Obviously running the CD would be quicker than Sp1 anyways.

Re: USB Device Not Recognized

I'm runnning 64-bit Enterprise and 32-bit Enterprise. I have the latest SP for all my OSs. It worked at home on my Win7 (I work at MS) with disk but can't seem to get it to work on any machine without the disk. I was hoping to just be able to plug it in and be able to transfer files.

I tried bluetooth ftp next as a work around and while it says the file was transferred it is nowhere to be found after. I checked the default folder, not there, changed to a new folder, not there. Does anything work on this phone? Ah, found the files, not where I directed them to go but I found them at least.

Re: USB Device Not Recognized

I haven't had any issues. Be sure it's connected as disk mode, and all will work fine. Can't expect it to be recognized in activesync mode without activesync installed on the host machine.

I do personal computer work and keep a toolkit of programs saved to the SD card of my phone, I just bring the USB cable with me. If I need one of the programs, pull the cable out of my pocket and I have everything I could possibly need right there with me. It's worked on every computer I've had to repair so far. Windows 2000 and newer.

Re: USB Device Not Recognized

Windows will display this error if the USB chipset on the PC side isn't supplying good enough power to your phone's USB chip or the USB data lines are getting messed up.

Use a higher quality USB cable and make sure your USB ports are supplying a good stable 5volts. Some laptops USB chipsets are extremely bad at providing good USB power (Same applies to anything USB). Next issue is your connector could be blown out causing a bad connection (either side of the cable). As a last resort try using a shorter USB cable or powered hub.

If all of the above is good, 99% chance its your phone.

As for the laptop issue above, try using a powered USB hub

Re: USB Device Not Recognized

I just ran across the same issue with my new TPro.
i grabbed my trusty usb cable from the bottom of my bag, and it didn't work. Switched to my best, exceedingly expensive usb cable, and it worked on the same port. tested the old trusty with my old phone... didn't work.

So... This issue may be caused by a faulty usb cable.

Re: USB Device Not Recognized

Have you tried turning off "Enable advanced network functionality" on your Windows Mobile?
Start> Settings> Connections> USB to PC
deselect "Enable advanced network functionality"

I had to do this on my work laptop.
