The legality of hspl

I'm a bit confused about how "legal" this is. I was under the impression that this whole custom ROM business was pretty much frowned upon by the manufacturer's and was essentially a hack.

Now with all the talk about "licensing" and the "licensing servers", I'm very confused. Who is doing the licensing? HTC? Why would they cooperate? Are they cooperating in some sense? Anyone with more knowledge about what exactly is meant by licensing it and what the role of the manufacturers are, it would be appreciated. Thanks!

Re: The legality of hspl

It is being licensed by those that developed it...not HTC...not your carrier. Your carrier would typcially void your warranty if you returned a phone that was 'unlocked'. That's why you're typcially advised to relock your phone after you've flashed it back to your carrier's original ROM before returning it or taking it in for service. Hope that helps.

Re: The legality of hspl

I'm not really sure whether it's legal or not. But what makes perfect sense to me is that the manufacturers (HTC in particular) are probably quite content to have such a strong following from all of us. Though they may lose a little new sales due to older equipment being "recycled," their brand name is getting further solidified...for free! And further, our friends will see our phones & want one or more too. The phone companies aren't complaining either since their we are their sub base.

Re: The legality of hspl

The manufactures don't like it, but don't plan on stopping it. They talked about this in the news forum regarding a fake take down notice of the 6.5.1 ROMS. One of the posts points to an informative article.

The licensing is solely for Cmonex and the Elite Team to keep track of their work and keep it out of the 'bay.

Re: The legality of hspl

The ones who have devised this unlocker are licensiung it to prevent others from re-selling it for money. They are not charging for this 'license' unless you use it on numerous phones, in other words to resell.

As far as the legality I cannot say for sure. HTC doesn't publicly condone this but they don't do anything about it either. So I guess what I'm trying to say is- don't worry about it
