help!! how to use new SIM card in New Zealand

I am in New Zealand with my Sprint TP2. I have never bought a local sim card. I tried to buy one; the lady at the store tried it and it wouldn't work. Is there something I need to do in settings to allow it? I thought the Sprint phones were unlocked for international use.

I would appreciate any advice,

Thanks,
mike

Turn your device off.
Then take the battery door off and remove the battery.
Then insert your SIM card from the New Zealand carrier.
Then replace the battery and the battery door.
Then turn your device on.
Then tap Start > Settings > Menu > Phone > All Settings > Personal > Network Tab
Then from the Mode of operation list, select Global and tap ok.
Then soft reset your device and let it boot completely.
Then try.

If that doesn't seem to work then:
Change the network mode to GSM only:
1. Tap Start > Settings > Menu > Phone Network Mode.
2. From the Mode of operation list, select GSM only.
3. Tap ok.

Good Luck!

Plus one horndoc, you must change modes .

Thanks,

It was set on global and didn't work - changed it to GSM only as you suggested and it worked.

Can you let us know how it worked out for you ? I'm going abroad in a month and plan on buying a prepaid SIM card there.

Did you have to unlock your SIM ?

Re: help!! how to use new SIM card in New Zealand

It works great; I didn't have to unlock the phone - just had to set phone network to "GSM only" not "Global".

My family and associates in the U.S. are using prepaid skype to call at about a penny a minute - voice quality is excellent.
