Tapping Home Screen And Manila 2.5

This will be strange I know but here goes - even if I wanted to try a Manila 2.5 custom rom, how do I tap the home screen to bring full backlight back when it is dimmed without tapping some type of shortcut that will take mw somewhere I may not want to go? This is no problem in 2.1 because the screen has plenty of space to tap without hitting any shortcuts. My vision is very poor so I may be missing something so obvious and thank you.

Tap on the sides, the top or tap the home tab.

You can also touch the scroll bar just under the screen...

Perhaps a volume button, esp. if you have it set as a scroll button (in which case it won't bring up the volume screen for a few seconds)
