The more RAM you have to keep powered, the more power required, thus the more battery you eat even while the device is suspended.
RAM is also more expensive than flash memory on a per megabyte basis, so there is probably some cost issues as well. |

If our battery life was less we would be b***hing, you know I am right, what pisses me off is we are powering 49 megs of RAM but the OS is using 25 megs at start up. There has to be a better way

Oh. Thanks. I had to know why, because it seems like the addition of 32 or 64MB of ram on an already costly device (~$600 MSRP) wouldn't be much of a hit to HTC. But now I understand about the power issue.

The amount of RAM on the 6800 is not really as much of an issue compared to how efficienty its used. The Treo 700wx, for example, has the same amount of physical RAM, but it leaves you with about 40mb unused after a reboot while the 6800 has much less.
Palm, despite their own issues, did a great job with the 700wx's memory usage. WM6 does take up more RAM, but nowhere near that much. If HTC was as efficient in the memory usage as Palm was then we wouldn't be having this discussion.
