Skype volume issues

I have been having issues on both my wm 6.1 updated mogul and my friends wm6 unupdated mogul and my skype just does not work flat out on mine and on hers it works but we can barely hear the other person on the other line. Just wondering if it is a software thing, an internet signal strength thing, or a hardware thing? Many thanks!!
