Sounds like you probably have some bad files/folders on the card. Before getting my 8gb, I had a 4gb micro-SDHC card that somehow had a corrupted file / folder. Many PPC ap's do not handle corrupted cards very well, and some applications would do strange things. When Windows Media player would scan the card for music files, when it started to add files to its library, it would just reboot my PPC. I forget whether I reformatted the card and reloaded it or used windows 'drive scan' utility to fix the file / folder, but once the card was good, the strange problems disappeared.
Regarding your PC, the 8gb card is a SDHC (SD High Capacity) card which is slightly different than SD. Most 'older' card readers (i.e., greater than 1-2 years??) do not support SDHC cards. The solution would be to format the card in a computer with a newer card reader.
