Should that be correct? Is 6.5 not available, possibly not in the software that came with the phone? If not there where can it be obtained? Or is that not a real advantage at this point?

Mastergadgets diagnosis was right on. Just so you know, you can set your device so it will sync or be in disk drive mode by default where you ended up changing it. Furthermore, you can select the option to ask you each time you plug your device into your PC what mode you want your device in.
