Is it possible to increase the character limit when texting?

My wife has a 800W and there is a red edit to increase the sms text character limit...up to 1600 characters if you want.

Does anyone know where to find that reg in the diamond?

Re: Is it possible to increase the character limit when texting?

you don't need to increase anything, just keep typing, in the top left corner you will see a counter, if you go over 160 characters it will auto create a 2nd + (for every 160) txt, so if you send a text with 300 characters, she will get 3 messages, and they are usually labled 1/3 2/3 3/3... I do this all the time with a friend

with MMS (which I don't think sprint has opened yet for the diamond or other wm phones), you can send unlimited characters too, but if the receiver can't receive mms, they get the 1/3 2/3 3/3 type messages

Re: Is it possible to increase the character limit when texting?

The character limit is actually due to the carrier. Sprint employs a 160 character limit on their SMS services. So the only thing you can really do is just keep typing it so it appears as new messages.

Re: Is it possible to increase the character limit when texting?

I understand about keep texting, as that is what I am doing now.
The issue is sometimes the texts are received out of order, which makes it hard to understand.

Please note that I did a reg edit on my wife's 800w, Sprint, and raised the character limit to 320. It has the ability to take it to 1600.

but if what you are saying is true, then no matter how much the character limit is increased, only 160 at a time will go out.

Re: Is it possible to increase the character limit when texting?

thats correct, only 160 will go out at a time, what I use to do is watch the counter, and put a 2, 3, 4, etc for each additional message as the first character, I would watch the counter so I knew when the message brakes were at

Re: Is it possible to increase the character limit when texting?

its really annoying. I wish it would at least add 1 of 2 to the messages or something. People always get my messages out of order. I know Samsung Ran add 1 of 2 etc.....

Your best option is to set the reg key to the same value that the carrier uses to split SMS's that way your phone does it and puts the 1/2 2/3 value on them for you. As others have said - 160 is the number for Sprint.

Re: Is it possible to increase the character limit when texting?

There's actually a reason for the 160 character limit when sending SMS.

Quote:
SMS was designed to deliver short bursts of data such as numerical pages. To avoid overloading the system with more than the standard forward-and-response operation, the inventors of SMS agreed on a 160-character maximum message size.
It's not a convenience issue at all, it's a matter of system overhead. 160 characters fits inside of the check packet that phones/towers use to communicate.

Go to HKEY_Current_User/Software/Microsoft/SMS/TextShared----change that value to 160
