Does that protect it as much as the hard plastic/rubberized ones do?

Yes~~~It's quite durable
but my case is in light color,a little bit dirty now...

That case will protect it more than the plastic/rubberized ones. The plastic/rubberized ones offer no protection for the screen if you drop it. And a screen protector only works for scratches, not for dropping. If I carried a purse, I would definitely use this case, but the phone is already bulky enough for my pocket.

Yeah it can add a bit of bulk to the phone which I agree, so i chose the rubberized plastic one and try and be more careful for not dropping it on the floor, but I do agree that leather is probably a better all round protection for any mobile devices.
