For what it's worth - Using vista WMDC would not work at all - no connection, no beeps, nada. However I could flash! The problem ended up being a bent pin on the phones USB male connector. Using a paperclip I was able to bend it back in place and now it works perfectly. Hope this helps others with this problem.
