I can understand a settings screen that you tap for each buy-in with the buy-in amount. And then giving a list of payout % and the app can calculate payout amounts. So you could assign a % to each payed position (although with a mobile app, I might cap at 10? Or is 4 the most anyone would use?) and if the % is high enough to meet a threshold (either buy-in amount or adjustable), then it would list that position as a payout. IE:
1st - 60%
2nd - 30%
3rd - 10%
it would figure for 4 $5 buy-ins:
1st - $15
2nd - $5
or 9 $5 buy-ins:
1st - $30
2nd - $15
or 10 $5 buy-ins:
1st - $30
2nd - $15
3rd - $5

Maybe that's too complicated for people to use. I don't know. Basically, it would take the total * %, round up to the nearest buy-in increment for each place until the pot is empty. Maybe that's the wrong algorithm, so I'd be open to others.

Does anyone have their own ideas for why they'd use the feature in the XDA app as it stands? I'm not trying to call that guy out or anything, just trying to understand.

Anyhow, I have little interest in doing any of this stuff for myself. But as long as I get feedback, I'll continue working on it.

First off... I would love you to continue your development! :)

I would think paying out to 4 or 5 at most would all that is needed for a mobile app, but i think most people will only use 3. If you are paying out more places than that, you are probably running a pretty big game with multiple tables and using a home pc or a laptop to do the job. I would definitely be content with 3 or 4 payout structure with preset percentages as laid out on the homepokertourney website (or configurable if it's just as easy)

I haven't played with the other app, but my guess for tracking all the players on the main screen is... well i really don't know? I do know that in big games with multiple tables there is software to track players and cause them to switch seats and tables as guys drop out of the tournement. Again, if running a game of this size, you probably aren't using a PPC to run this game.

Thanks for sticking with it! :)

Oh yeah,

I think i'm going to be playing in a home game this Friday so I will either take your app as it and try it out or with whatever changes you make between now and then and report back :)

Re: Holdem Tournament Timer App?

Ok,

Just played with the app a bit. Here are some intitial thoughts..

1. A start/stop/pause button on the main screen would be good, This would allow for the pre-scheduled breaks (more serious game) or the ability to simply take a break when the table decides to (less serious game) :) ... speaking of which, can you just run the pre-set breaks down to 0 and it's as if you don't have any scheduled?

2. The app needs to stop at the expiration of a round due to being in the middle of a hand, then started back up for the beginning of the next round and the increased blinds (also a reason for #1)

3. A tab or options page with preset blind structures and/or configurable blind structures

4. Oh yeah, an actual end of round timer sound to go off just before it pauses and waits for your prompt to begin next round/upped blinds ... in a game where guys are a little more serious they will run right past the time if something doesn't sound off to get their attention.

5. the afor mentioned stuff about number of players in the tourney, buy in and payout structure, and the power and config stuff you mentioned would be nice too, but the above stuff is needed to make it usuable to run a small home tournement.

Hope that feedback helps!

I have started a new thread for the app:

Please make future replies there. Thanks! :)
