Marsware WeatherPanel + Custom Skins

UPDATE: 8/20/07

Please go to THIS POST for downloading WeatherPanel.

There has been a problem with Authorization on the server for WP and this will fix it.

You can follow the rest of this thread after the installation though!

Thanks,

Mal

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Okay, below I'm attaching the "latest" version of Marsware Weatherpanel (v2.5.1), a highly skinable weather application/today screen plugin.

Note, the original author of the program has been MIA for 1+ year, so the software is pretty much "free" now.

This version I am posting works for BOTH the 6700 and the 700wx!

Below this post will be 2 of my "custom" skins that are extremely minimal. If you want those big fancy ones, you can get them at here:
http://www.marsware.net/WeatherPanel/skins.htm and other places.

Copy all "themes" to \Program Files\Marsware\Themes
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Also, for additional "must have" add ons for WP see:

Curiously, what if it were to snow?

Not sure what you mean. Are you referring to the "icon"?

They change for snow and ALL weather. Here are the "default" icons:
http://www.marsware.net/WeatherPanel.../default/5.gif

And here is what I'm using now (Umicons) for snow:

http://www.marsware.net/WeatherPanel...Umicons/15.gif

Here are ALL of the default icons found here.

And my "new" icons (not shown in my pic above) are here.

Malatesta 09-23-2006 04:26 PM

Even *more* simple!

btw, if people want to make my theme or any others even more "simple", you can do this:

Open any .wpl file (the theme file) and delete the following:

;SETTINGS
1,3

This deletes the little yellow "weatherpanel" icon to the extreme left to get to the settings/configuration.

Now, you may ask How do I get back to my settings?

You'll have to go to your Today settings for the Plugins and hit "Options" when highlighting the WP listing.

In other words, this is good once you have your WP setup and are not planning on making changes frequently. Personally, I like this look the best.

i like weatherpanel, especially since i am a meteorologist, but i can not get it to work right with my 6700. its has a lot of cool features that sbsh and spb don't have. it'll usually work for a hour or so and then i have to do a hard reset because it freeze up my phone.

jamaa124 09-24-2006 06:18 AM

has anyone tried the windows black vista skins? it looks really cool with weatherpanel. i had it working for a little while until i had to hard reset my 6700.

Malatesta City Theme

2 Attachment(s)
Okay, upon request (and NO, I am not taking requests! This is an excpetion b/c I wanted it too! :D )

Here is my Malatesta 2 Theme modified:

Malatesta City

New

- Removed Settings Icon (you'll have to set it through Today --> WP --> Options!) Sorry, had to save space somehow! Remember you can deactivate cities and set their rotation time all under your settings/advanced.

- Added "City" label/function

- Shrunk down and aligned font to fit everything

- Temperature is actually "Real Feel" temp

Just create a folder under Themes (call it whatever) and put the .wpl file into it, then select under your Themes option.

Note: Due to limited space, I suggest you keep your City names short e.g. I use NYC for New York, NY and Home for...well home! So keep it short to make sure it all fits on the 2nd line.

BTW, now that you are taking requests would you make a theme that... Hehehe just kidding!!! :P

Updated WeatherPanel theme for 240x240 devices (Treo)

2 Attachment(s)
What it is:

Simple-240 - An updated WeatherPanel theme with detail screens to fit the Treo's 240x240 screen resolution. If you use the Default theme, then you've probably noticed some of the weather screens are too wide (or long) for the Treo's screen.

What's different about it:

Instead of designing a whole new them, I modified the Default theme files to fit the Treo 700 - while attempting to maintain the original look of the WeatherPanel detail screens.

How I did it:

I determined which files WeatherPanel was using to display the detail screens (both graphic and layout files). Next, I altered the graphic files the best I could - no flaming from graphics artists please! I then rearranged the layouts to fit.

What it contains:

It contains updated graphics and layout files, plus most of the Today screen layout files that have been posted in this thead by myself, Malatesta and Treonated.

How to install it:

Download the attached file and upzip it. Copy the Simple-240 folder (and files) to your device at \Program Files\MarsWare\WeatherPanel\Themes. Then enter the WeatherPanel setup and change the theme to Simple-240 and, select on of the Simple-240 layouts (if you want - any Default layout will work too).

What it looks like:

Hey, thanks for the feedback Bob! :)

It was a fun exercise. I just hope the product keeps running for a while, considering the absence of the developer. Apparently, if the Marsware site goes away, so do the weather updates for the product...

I guess the price is right, though! I checked out the other offerings, and at this point in time, WeatherPanel is still tops (IMO)!

lawmangrant 10-03-2006 04:39 AM

I was diggin this program until i saw that it was to big for the 700.....

Came back and found the 240 file and was LOVIN THIS!!!!!!

Thank you for the hard work.

Now, the only question, how can I get the radar to work? It just says no image has been defined.

Thanks!
Chris

Chris

You have to setup WeatherPanel to retrieve radar images from a URL.

In the WeatherPanel settings, select your city and click Edit. Then click the Weather Images button. Choose Add New, then type a name and the URL to the image you want.

I used the URL to one of my local tv station web sites: http://www.king5.com/sharedcontent/n...le-440x330.jpg

When you find the image you want (in IE on your PC), right-click on it, choose properties, and you'll see it's URL. This is what you type into WeatherPanel. By the way, it doesn't have to be a radar image - it can by any type of image you want. For example: Solar system simulator: http://mars1.jpl.nasa.gov/mgs/realtime/odyssey.jpg

Another thing: After WeatherPanel has collected a few images, it displays a little play button on the image. When clicked, it will animate all of the images it has... :D

Site for WP Skins

Not sure if people know about this here:

Here are a bunch of themes for WP here:
http://pixel.citadel.org/weatherpane...Custom_Layouts

I gotta say...I just tried out "Stealth" and it's pretty darn cool. Haven't seen what limitations there are but I'm impressed!

CozBoogie 10-07-2006 01:23 AM

Quick question...I'm running Marsware (and I love), I also dl the Simple-240 stuff...but it doesn't show up in the Weather Panel setup screens for changing themes. Any thoughts?

Where exactly did you install the themes to?

CozBoogie 10-07-2006 02:03 AM

I put them in Themes.

Pibe38 10-07-2006 04:10 AM

Have you tried after a soft reset?

It should look like this: Program Files\Marsware\Themes\Simple-240

Then go to settings -> display. Select Simple-240 under Theme and then the layouts should become available.

You DO have to be logged in to see that file, seeing as you only have 1 post did you happen to not see the file, log in and post that you can't see the file and not check that post?

Hey Malatesta,

Any screenshots with the Stealth theme by any chance? I installed the Vista theme from that Wiki but it took over the whole screeen (the ones that fit). Not really looking for something like that.

give me a day or so...sorry, real busy.

One thing I learnd from the Stealth theme is having it show the forcast in text e.g. you can get it to say "Partly cloudy in NYC" I then added "w/ x% chance of rain". Looks cool.

WeatherPanel New Site

For those of you interested in WeatherPanel a large group of the followers/developers moved to this site due to the spam/trolls at the old site. More images can be found here.

is this a full version download or a trial?

It's really the trial version, however, the developer of the application has been missing for 1+ years and it seems as if the trial never expires.

It is NOT recommended to buy this application since many people have reported no getting a reg code for it. As I mentioned, the app has essentially gone free... but anything can happen in the future.

KungFuJoe 10-16-2006 07:42 PM

How would you compare this to PocketWeather? I currently am trying out PW and I like the look of it...lots of info, clean looking icons and the today plugin fits nicely. However, there is the issue of having to eventually pay for it and also, it seems to not be able to update quite often. There is an option to display the last update time and often times...I can see that it hasn't updated for hours...sometimes half a day.

EDIT:

Well...instead of asking, I did what I should have done from the start and I installed ran WeatherPanel myself. So far so good. Seems to have a better overall look than PocketWeather with all the functionality that I was used to. Plus, the icon transitions when you change locations in the today panel is cool. :)

New WP theme: Stealth-240

2 Attachment(s)
Stealth-240 WeatherPanel theme

Thanks to Malatesta for turning us on to the Stealth theme. Here?s a modified version that looks better - and fits our device.

Based on the STEALTH theme, developed by Ken of WeatherPanel.net fame. The original theme can be found here.

Changes:

So many I?m not even going to go into it. If you?ve used the old one, you?ll definitely notice the difference. This package includes Malatesta?s Malatesta popup combo layout, plus a modified version of it called Malatesta popup combo_2.

How to install it:

Download the attached file and unzip it. Copy the Stealth-240 folder (and files) to your device at \Program Files\MarsWare\WeatherPanel\Themes (Note: there's a readme file in the zip with more detailed instructions). Then enter the WeatherPanel setup and change the theme to Stealth-240 and, select one of the Stealth layouts.

What it looks like:

Malatesta popup combo_2.wpl layout on both a light and dark Today theme. As you can see, it disappears on the black theme (still looks good though):

http://story.nventure.com/pics/Stealth-240_v1_000.png - http://story.nventure.com/pics/Stealth-240_v1_002.png

I added little ?stealth? icons to perform the pop-up functions. Here?s a legend:

http://story.nventure.com/pics/Stealth-240_v1_016.png
  1. Hidden settings button
  2. Change city (up)
  3. Change city (down)
  4. Information icon ? forecast pop-up
  5. Graph icon ? graphs pop-up
  6. Radar icon ? radar pop-up
  7. Refresh
Other updated layouts include Stealth and Stealth 4cast:

http://story.nventure.com/pics/Stealth-240_v1_003.png

When you click on the date, it cycles through other variations:

http://story.nventure.com/pics/Stealth-240_v1_004.png - http://story.nventure.com/pics/Stealth-240_v1_005.png

This layout is included in Stealth 4cast (for those with REALLY good eyes):

I wouldn't pay untill a new release is done or something major happens. Who knows someone could be scamming these people who purchased it.

Updated: Tabs-240 Theme

Per requests from members at Treocentral, I squeezed in the current % chance of rain (or snow!) on the TabsSmaller layouts, plus added a new clear version (clear2 with dark borders). Here're some screen shots:

TabsSmaller(black) on black background:

TabsSmaller(black) on light background:

TabsSmaller(clear2) *new* on light background (dark borders):

In case you're wondering what the alert was:

You can download the new version of Tabs-240 from this post. My recommendation is to copy the Tabs-240 folder over the top of your old one...

The WeatherPanel wiki has a layout reference that gives you a high-level overview of the commands.

If you have any specific questions, post them here and I (or someone else) can probably answer them for you...
