Post Your Compressed EXE's HERE!! Updated 2-27-09 11:30PM

Since there is a new upswing in people compressing the exe's they use, i thought it would be great for the community if we post them all here in one place.

For those who dont know the benefits of this, uncompressing/ and then re-compressing your exe's can drastically boost the load and startup times of programs such as TOMTOM and other sluggish apps. Just take the exe posted in this thread and drop it into the corresponding app folder in your Program Files and you will see the results.

As I see them posted across the site I'll link to them here as well.

I'll do my best to keep the first post updated with all the exe's and a running list of compatible programs.

And if this works out well, I'll later request that it become a Sticky.

So here we go...

When posting please make sure to put the following info in your post that will be linked to so we can inventory multiple versions of apps and keep things organized: (Thx Slypher for the format!)

Application: You Tube.exe
Version Number: 1.6.1822.2028
Original Size: 728KB
UPX'd Size: 247KB
Screen Resolution: VGA

Excellent idea, however, dont we have to be careful of posting files from paid apps?

Maybe there should be some rules on what we can and can't post.

Also think it would be a benefit to post original size and compressed size too :-)

great thinking Slyph... I agree, come up with a template of how the file should be posted and I'll plug it into the first post...

Excellent point. I was just about to post memmaid, tomtom, kinoma, and pocket artist. Then i thought, "oh oh, maybe i shouldn't". Not exactly sure what would happen, good or bad. So, i'll wait. Thanks for bringing that up.
dschoenike

oh yeah, i guess those apps i just mentioned could be added to the "work" list.

hmm for now only freeware apps will be added to the first post. I can't be held accountable for the posting of any other apps, so do so at your own risk...

Hey Darren, it's for seeqpod mobile. Its music search/player app that first started on the iphone i believe, then got ported for windows mobile. it was offered for free for a while, then the company started charging for it. :(

Here's the compressed camera exe from the touch pro.

Here you go, these are the EXE's I compressed here at work:

I'll post more when I get home. (This is really easy because it stores the backups in a folder, so you can just go back and re-compress everything and zip them up like I did here.)

For those of us who dont know: What are the advantages of compressed apps over a regular app?

Also what does the version of Opera posted in this thread do that the one currently on our phones dont ?

Maybe you could put a brief description of the app next to the links in post one?
Thanks

With the compressed app, the size of the file on the disk is smaller. For instance, a 1.5mb file might compress down to about 400kb. This improves the speed at which the programs start since the filesize is smaller.

The file won't take up less RAM, however. In fact, it will take up more. The added UPX code will make the file take up a slightly bit more ram when in use (the file gets uncompressed as it's loaded.)

Although the compressed EXE's take up slightly more room in RAM when loaded, the overall benefit outweighs the extra ram needed. A program without upx compression at 1.5mb might take up 1.5mb of ram, but after UPX compression it could sit on the disk as a 400kb file, then take up 1.7mb of ram after it's completely loaded.

These file sizes I use are for example only and differ from app to app.

makes sense now. I thought they were just compressed exe files form other devices.

If you go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=481880 you can download "Squeezer 1.1" which basically is a utility you use on your PC. You drag and drop EXE's from your phone into one folder, run a .bat file, then find the compressed versions of those EXE's in another folder and drag them back onto your phone. It's pretty simple. If you want to get to exe's found in your windows or program files directory, use activesync as your connection type.

Is it really necessary to post the compressed exe's? They take up server space and use up bandwidth. Sure, it makes it easier for those who are lazy or aren't computer savy. But the Squeezer app is easy enough to use and if anyone needs help they can just ask for it here. A list of what apps work or don't work would suffice. Just thinking out loud.

The compression utility I linked to won't run on Macs so people who don't have a PC can benefit from this thread.

Well let me ask you this, how many blind people actually use a computer? My job here at work is to make software 508 compliant, meaning people with disabilities can use the software just as well as your average person. I have no idea how many blind people will actually be using an inpatient rehabilitation evaluation system, but still, making the program compatible with third party screen reader software is a requirement.

I guess my point is, just because you don't know how many mac users exist doesn't mean they don't exist. Besides that, what if someone's PC is broken or they are away from home?

I'm sure these files won't put a large dent into storage.

The explanation of the advantages is in bold in the first post, but I like Chronster's explanation far better...

I thought about putting a brief description but later decided against it... these exe's are really only going to be beneficial to user who already know and use the app that's been compressed... so they know what it is already.

I wasn't trying say this thread is a bad idea, just if it's necessary or not. Anything to help out other PPCGeekers is all good. But if someone really needs/wants a compressed exe they could always request it. As far as storage and bandwidth goes, no I'm sure it doesn't amount to much in relation to the entire site. But then again I'm not the one paying to keep the site running, so I can't really comment on that.

I'm sure the modds and the one who pays the bills dont mind as long as we 1 - dont post warez, and 2 - keep this on topic. This is no different from Rstoy's OEM threads and the like, right? You could ask the same questions about the 'need' to post all those OEMs as well...

  • AutoRun.exe is from MortScript and the mortscript version I have is version 4.1
  • The FingerMenu exe's are from version 1.10.
  • Kinoma is version 5.0.69
  • Launcher.exe belongs to Sprint TV (along with SprintTV.exe) and I'm unsure what the version is. Whatver the latest one is (I'll check when i get service)
  • Mundu is version 1.0.14
  • Unsure of what version MusicID is but it's the one with the blue bar at the top, not the one with pink all over it.
  • PictureMail was from the update from Sprint's website (sorry i cant find version number.)
  • Skyfire is version 0.9.0.9151
  • TeleNav is straight from TeleNav's website and it's version 5.1.16
Sorry for not being able to get more details on some of them.

They replace the existing file on your device with a smaller more efficiently compressed version. They make the app loadup much quicker.

Also, these are not cabs, they have to be copied into the folder that holds the app in your Program Files folder on your device, Storage Card, or Internal Storage (depending on the device you have)
