Well let me ask you this, how many blind people actually use a computer? My job here at work is to make software 508 compliant, meaning people with disabilities can use the software just as well as your average person. I have no idea how many blind people will actually be using an inpatient rehabilitation evaluation system, but still, making the program compatible with third party screen reader software is a requirement.

I guess my point is, just because you don't know how many mac users exist doesn't mean they don't exist. Besides that, what if someone's PC is broken or they are away from home?

I'm sure these files won't put a large dent into storage.

For those of us who dont know: What are the advantages of compressed apps over a regular app?

Also what does the version of Opera posted in this thread do that the one currently on our phones dont ?

Maybe you could put a brief description of the app next to the links in post one?
Thanks

The explanation of the advantages is in bold in the first post, but I like Chronster's explanation far better...

I thought about putting a brief description but later decided against it... these exe's are really only going to be beneficial to user who already know and use the app that's been compressed... so they know what it is already.

With the compressed app, the size of the file on the disk is smaller. For instance, a 1.5mb file might compress down to about 400kb. This improves the speed at which the programs start since the filesize is smaller.

The file won't take up less RAM, however. In fact, it will take up more. The added UPX code will make the file take up a slightly bit more ram when in use (the file gets uncompressed as it's loaded.)

Although the compressed EXE's take up slightly more room in RAM when loaded, the overall benefit outweighs the extra ram needed. A program without upx compression at 1.5mb might take up 1.5mb of ram, but after UPX compression it could sit on the disk as a 400kb file, then take up 1.7mb of ram after it's completely loaded.

These file sizes I use are for example only and differ from app to app.

Perfect breakdown!

I'll post more when I get home. (This is really easy because it stores the backups in a folder, so you can just go back and re-compress everything and zip them up like I did here.)

Chron, can i get more infor on the versions these exe's came from? PM it to me if you can so I can add these to the first post... TIA

I wasn't trying say this thread is a bad idea, just if it's necessary or not. Anything to help out other PPCGeekers is all good. But if someone really needs/wants a compressed exe they could always request it. As far as storage and bandwidth goes, no I'm sure it doesn't amount to much in relation to the entire site. But then again I'm not the one paying to keep the site running, so I can't really comment on that.

I'm sure the modds and the one who pays the bills dont mind as long as we 1 - dont post warez, and 2 - keep this on topic. This is no different from Rstoy's OEM threads and the like, right? You could ask the same questions about the 'need' to post all those OEMs as well...

They replace the existing file on your device with a smaller more efficiently compressed version. They make the app loadup much quicker.

Also, these are not cabs, they have to be copied into the folder that holds the app in your Program Files folder on your device, Storage Card, or Internal Storage (depending on the device you have)
