Iris Browser 1.1.7 Update Now Available
Iris Browser 1.1.7 was released April 23, 2009
For prior versions and their updates/changes, see Torch Mobile's (the developer) blog Give it a try today! Frequently Asked Questions How do I install the Iris Browser for Windows Mobile 5/6? Simply download the CAB file to your computer, transfer it to your phone via Bluetooth, ActiveSync, or memory card, and click on the CAB file in the File Manager. Where can I download the Iris Browser for Windows CE or Qt? The Iris Browser for Windows CE and Qt is only available to device manufacturers. How do I disable all of these animations? Using a registry editor for your phone, such as Mobile Registry Editor, set the key \\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\IrisBrowser\AnimationsEnabled to false. What other hidden settings are available? In the registry, you can set the following keys:
YouTube's standard desktop version requires Flash 9 or above. This is not available for Windows Mobile. If you leave the browser in Mobile Mode (Page->View->Mobile Mode in the menu), you can visit YouTube and will be redirected to the mobile edition. If you happen to have the FlashLite 3 ActiveX control installed, Iris Browser will automatically use it and videos should work. My AT&T/Sprint Fuze freezes. This is a known issue specific to AT&T and Sprint Touch Pro and Diamond devices by HTC. We do not have a device that reproduces the issue in our offices, but we are working hard to come up with a solution. How does zoom work? There are two ways to zoom. Double-tapping the screen on a touchscreen device will attempt to zoom to the region of the page you are interested in. The algorithm is not perfect but will in most cases identify the proper region. Double tapping again will zoom back out to fit the entire page in the screen. Zoom can also be achieved by the menu (Page->Zoom) or key bindings. Key bindings don't work on my Smartphone Edition device. This is a known issue and will be improved in a future release. Not all devices work well with the key bindings at this time. There is a crude user interface for configuring key bindings but it will not work in all cases. Does the Iris Browser use a proxy server for rendering? No. Iris does not use any proxy servers for rendering or pre-processing. Everything is done directly on the device. |

Looks good.

Re: Torch Mobile releases Iris Browser v1.1.1 (commercial release)
does flash work with this? I've read in some places that it does, but I can't get it to work on my TP.

Re: Torch Mobile releases Iris Browser v1.1.1 (commercial release)
would like to reiterate that i like this alot, but a few things.
- full screen mode doesnt "stick" after you enable it then go back to the options at the bottom its back to normal screen mode. - typing in reply boxes like here at ppcgeeks, pressing the enter button on the keyboard doesnt drop down a line like in pie or opera - zoom is a bit cumbersome, i'd like to be able to set a max zoom and zoomed in amount as the zoom options dont "stick" either. - address bar doesnt "stick either", i should be able to enable the address bar and it stay up there until i disable it or uncheck it in the options - no flash, if anyones got a solution let me know - 97 on acid3, holy crap! awesome. - i would like to enable or disable the 3d animations and slide effects, etc etc while it looks cool and cute, i would still like to have the option to disable it. - it takes a press and hold for a second to click links, that needs to be a bit quicker. - pretty friggin fast rendering and scrolling around unlike skyfire or opera mobile - has been compatible with all my favorite sites so far awesome and i hope they continue to make it better. i think theyve progressed far better and faster than opera and skyfire. |
Re: Torch Mobile releases Iris Browser v1.1.1 (commercial release)
I've been impressed with this browser over the past year or so, still a few quirks / bugs that makes me prevent it from being my default browser. But for those who don't know this is based on webkit, so it's using the same rendering engine as mobile Safari and Google's browser for Android.

I agree. I can only test and make suggestions to Skyfire, so I can't say much about it behind the scenes, but Iris Browser has improved IMMENSELY in the last three iterations. I am a big fan of it now. |
Re: Torch Mobile releases Iris Browser v1.1.1 (commercial release)
Does anyone know how to use the plug-ins for this browser or where to even get them? I read a little about it on their blog but it didn't make much sense to me.

Re: Torch Mobile releases Iris Browser v1.1.1 (commercial release)

once skyfire properly supports vga, which should be soon right? there will be an awesome browser war going on.
unfortunately i havent recieved an email from the torch blog website confirming my signup so i cant comment about it. wtf. i would like to help as best as i can but their signup thing is broken TO INSTALL FLASH install juggalo flash cab (dunno if this is required but i installed it to device first) drop NPFL3ppc.dll into program files/iris broswer/plugins restart iris, and flash will be replaced with a black box and play button. press the play button! edit: youtube vids dont seem to be playing but other embedded flash like on the main page works |
Re: Torch Mobile releases Iris Browser v1.1.1 (commercial release)
That works like a charm Torx.
|
Re: Torch Mobile releases Iris Browser v1.1.1 (commercial release)
Thanks for posting that. Like ya said, i now get the black box which looks like it'll play, but... nothing happens. That's alright though, it's a step in the right direction. I appreciate the effort. Thanks,

Re: Torch Mobile releases Iris Browser v1.1.1 (commercial release)
You need to long press the play button black box and then wait. It will come up eventually depending on how much data needs to be loaded.
|
Re: Torch Mobile releases Iris Browser v1.1.1 (commercial release)
yea, you know iris requires a long press for just about everything.
im wondering if the latest official adobe flash cab will make anything better. or a latest .dll file |
Re: Torch Mobile releases Iris Browser v1.1.1 (commercial release)
I just noticed that there's new version out already, 1.1.2. I have no idea what they've changed, their blog doesn't have an update about it.

Re: Torch Mobile releases Iris Browser v1.1.1 (commercial release)
Is this flash for Opera as well?

Q: What phones does Skyfire run on? What countries? |
Re: Torch Mobile releases Iris Browser v1.1.1 (commercial release)
If you call blurry, unreadable text support then I guess skyfire supports VGA. Personally, I think its horrible.

I've noticed better rendering and speed with this latest update. |
Re: Torch Mobile releases Iris Browser v1.1.2 (commercial release)
Bad experience for me. This browser is a memory hog on my mogul. I soft reset with 22-23 free mb and when I start this thing and navigate to yahoo home screen, BAM, low memory and shuts down. Same thing as Opera Mobile. Otherwise nice browser. Probably better on diamond/tp. Will stick with Opera mini and Skyfire for now. Just my $0.02.

Re: Torch Mobile releases Iris Browser v1.1.2 (commercial release)
Been playing around with this for last hour......my thoughts so far:
1. Seem to do a good job at rendering pages, even some Opera Mobile and Skyfire had issues with 2. Downloads items better than Opera Mobile, for example Rapidshare files 3. Usability is pretty terrible compared to Opera Mobile though. No way to set zoom settings so I am required on every page to go to the menu and click zoom to 100. This gets very annoying. Some sites like espn when zoomed the text required me to scroll left and right. 4. Flash works about the same as Opera Mobile, hardly at all. Most sites say it needs to be updated. Some that work in Opera Mobile do not, for example speedtest 5. Can't click on buttons or link, requires holding down for a sec or 2 for anything to work 6. Able to import all my bookmarks from PIE and Opera Mobile, this was definitely nice! |

Refer to hardware recommendations prior to using an application (ignore the lien where they say "it is known to ..." as Torch obviously only tested this on the hardware specs in bold red). From TorchMobile.com I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that Torch did not test to see how the browser would perform on the HTC Mogul from Sprint, which only has half the recommended RAM (64MB). |
Re: Torch Mobile releases Iris Browser v1.1.2 (commercial release)
goto options and press check for update, works wonderfully.
gonna see how this version stacks up, should be better, as if it isnt already better. wow, i just noticed the data usage details page and the tabs switching page, even though the 3d rendering of tab pages is a little rough, its pretty tight that its implemented into a browser. skyfire will definately clean up their vga issue, but until then its on the backburner for me |
Re: Torch Mobile releases Iris Browser v1.1.2 (commercial release)
On a VZ6800/mogul, could open a webpage and then the second page it shuts down bc of memory issues. Looked ok, the tap and zoom was a little buggy for me. Oh well, guess Ill try it out if i get a diff phone, otherwise...skyfire is the only one that fully runs without problems.

+1 ... Agree totally, I don't ever use Skyfire anymore ... waiting for them to get their act together. By the way, the update is indeed under options, just look into preferences ... updated flawlessly. Thanks. |

Re: Torch Mobile releases Iris Browser v1.1.2 (commercial release)

Re: Torch Mobile releases Iris Browser v1.1.2 (commercial release)

Mogul has the lowest memory RAM of minimum specs for Iris, which may explain the memory issues. Iris will work better on devices with higher specs. Iris' hardware recommendations |

Re: Torch Mobile releases Iris Browser v1.1.3 (commercial release)
Update from their blog:
Touch Pro (Fuze), Diamond Users Rejoice! (1.1.3) Posted dateFebruary 23, 2009 Comment5 Comments Touch Pro and Diamond users should be happy to know that we released Iris Browser 1.1.3 for Windows Mobile just moments ago. All reports indicate that our new workaround for crashes on these two devices seems to have worked! You can download it at the usual place, or use the auto-update mechanism found at the bottom of the Preferences dialog. This release is not just for Touch Pro and Diamond users, however. It also includes many other fixes: * Plugin (like FlashLite) interaction fixes * Animated GIF fixes * Re-activation of an optimization for some JavaScript intensive sites * Many editing bugs are fixed (yes, you can blog with it again!) * All known and reported crashes are fixed * Improved memory management for large images * Minor canvas improvements * Performance improvements, including 12% faster JavaScript We hope to keep up the pace of updates over the next month or two as we sort out the remainder of our 1.1.0 bugs. You may have noticed that last bullet point in particular. Yes, 12% faster JavaScript. We have a blog post about this coming up in part 2 of our Under The Hood blog series. |
