Dosbox on the HTC Touch Pro?

I've downloaded two versions of Dosbox:

DOSBox 0.63 CVS (15.02.2006) by n0p
pDOSBox0.63-p1

Neither version works with the built-in keyboard on the Touch Pro.

The CVS version has an on-screen keyboard, but I can't open the keymapper (ctrl + f1 does nothing) and it crashes if a physical key is pressed. It's also upside-down if it's launched while the keyboard is out, for some reason.

In the pDOSBox program, there is no onscreen keyboard (at least by default), and only the return key works.

Any suggestions?

I am running a Sprint HTC Touch Pro with "SSS" Windows Mobile 6.5 custom rom. However, Dosbox should also run on Windows Mobile 6.1.

I've tweaked the dosbox.conf file and the arrow keys in the mapper.txt file for Windows Mobile Dosbox version .072 so that it is more compatible with the HTC Touch Pro.

I also had trouble getting the keyboard to work. Many suggest using KforTouchPro (See http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?p=2791652 ) but it did not work for me.

What did work for me is changing the Data value in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Layouts\e0010409\Ime File

This I changed from JakuKbMgr.dll to msim.dll and did a hard reset. Make sure you have the file msim.dll in your Windows directory on your Touch Pro phone before you do this!

T9 supposedly no longer works, but I don't use T9 anyway.

You will need to create the folders Drive and Drive\ISO on your storage card in order to mount the c: drive and d: cdrom drives with this version. Dos programs should go into the Drive folder, preferably in individual sub folders.

Let me know if this file works for your HTC Touch Pro. Thanks.

Speed

A big issue here has been speed. After finding some suggestions in the forums below and changing the core to verysimple, the cycles to max, and the frameskip to 5, I did have a noticeable increase in speed.

It's still not as speedy as the desktop version of dosbox, but my favorite game Quest for Glory 1 VGA version seems a little more playable now.

I did notice the mouse on screen is a little more erratic when the keyboard is out, so it is best to close the keyboard when using the mouse until a fix for this is discovered or use equivalent keystrokes.

Hi Winged Geek,

First of all I would like to say a big THANK YOU for enabling the hw SIP of TP to work with n0p dosbox. I actually prefer PocketDOS for the fullscreen VGA, and hw SIP, but as we know DOSBox is the only one with SB emulation.

Wouldn't it be just great if they just merged the two and PocketDOS came with dosbox's soundblaster?

Well you just did it. I have been looking for the solution for months, only today did i think to search for it under the touch pro tag. Seeing from the date of your entries, my timing is just nice.

I was trying to get Leisure Suit Larry 1 VGA to work on my Touch pro with everything enabled. VGA, Soundblaster, hardware keyboard etc... You should be quite familiar with it since it is also Sierra VGA game and from same era. After following your advice about msim.dll and using your zips, it worked! Kudos to you for that.

But I noticed it was terribly slow. Much slower than the default package on n0p's website. After testing by playing around with the .conf and cycles and auto cpu and simple core and all that, I realized that the reason for the slowness is coz you are using the xscale version. Shouldn't touch pro be using ARM? it is after all intel strongarm processor. I reinstalled n0p's ARM dosbox version, then copied the mapping.txt and your dosbox.conf files inside, then the speed went up. from about 200 cycles to 400 and above on average.

So is there a reason why you are using xscale version? Coz I am noob to this and would like to learn more. Also if other people are reading this, and have similar experience, perhaps they can share their settings. Now that we got it working on high speed, perhaps we can optimize the .conf file to provide the best settting. Perhaps using sb2 instead of sb16, using fullcore, using smaller audio buffer etc.

To run old point and click adventure games using the hardware keyboard of Touch Pro would be my dream come true!
