Looking for a OBD II software solution
With gas prices many people have bought a product called Scangage II and found success monitoring their MPG... http://www.scangauge.com/
I would like to have a product like this that I can use with my 700Wx and have found that there are a few options available...Here are a couple..... http://www.qcontinuum.org/obdgauge/ Has anyone tried anything like this? The site has a freeware program but I will need to purchase a plug for the car that is either wired or bluetooth. Interested in a DIY or review of a successful solution. |
Re: Looking for a OBD II software solution
either way you're going to need a wired OBDII adapter or wireless one to plug into the OBDII plug on your car (underneath the dash on the drivers side).. sorry there's no DIY fix here

Re: Looking for a OBD II software solution
Back in the Handspring Palm days they use to have a cable that plugged into the ODB2 conn I was pissed cause I drove a 85 VW OBD1. Search some more you'll find it.

Re: Looking for a OBD II software solution
i just bought a bluetooth obd2 adapter from ebay, ima try that autoenginuity.com software on my treo 800w when i get it
|
Re: Looking for a OBD II software solution
wow, i mentioned this in a past thread looking for a solution and this thread delivers.
so all i need is a BT odb2 adapter and this ppc software and im good to go?? i got an 04 lincoln ls v8 and im curious about my engine runnings without spending lots of money on an obd reader bigmoe, keep us updated, which one did you buy? |
Re: Looking for a OBD II software solution
i would also like to know this.
|
Re: Looking for a OBD II software solution
this would be great. i've got an obd I f-body and i hate lugging my laptop in the car to do any kind of data logging. thirdgen.org has instructions on how to make your own cable to connect to a laptop. im sure it wouldnt be hard to change it a little to connect via mini usb.
edit: nvm, didnt see it was obdII only. oh well. |
Re: Looking for a OBD II software solution
i have a 2000 honda accord ex v6 and i bought this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/elm32...mZ200247254703
and i downloaded scantool from www.autoenginuity.com. i havent received the shipment yet and ill keep everyone updeated on it. |
Re: Looking for a OBD II software solution
I have been looking into something like this . I was really wondering how good it works before buying. I have a evap problem on one of my 98 Fords I can't figure out for the life of me. Basically I would like for something like this to do more advanced stuff like having access to toggle sensors etc without having to buy a 3000$ OBD II computer. I am just really curious on how deep this software goes.

Re: Looking for a OBD II software solution
I am very interested in hearing someone's success story about this though, to avoid having it not work. Bluetooth sounds awesome, and if it works with the software that goes on the phone that would be sweet and save me a lot of trouble lugging equipment around.

Re: Looking for a OBD II software solution
ok so i got the bluetooth obdII adapter today, i tried scantool and it didnt want to con nect to the treo, ODB Guage worked perfectly fine, although sometimes it would gice me trouble commecting, i connected using com port 4 and i checked the serial option in the bluetooth settings. i also tried to connect to it using my friends nokia n800 with software called "carman" and it seemed to be more stable using that but it was stilla bit glitchy, i will look into this more later this week hopefully

Re: Looking for a OBD II software solution
does anyone know of any other freeware apps for windows mobile that i can try?
|
Re: Looking for a OBD II software solution
I bought an OBDII cable for $70 on ebay, but I haven't found any WM software for it.
For $500 you can easily find a custom tuner system for your vehicle. I know, specifically for my car, I can get LS1edit which lets me change EVERYTHING in the computer. Highly dangerous/amazing. $3000 on a scanner would be foolish unless you were a mechanic, because even those high-end scanners aren't capable of tuning like the specific systems are... |

Re: Looking for a OBD II software solution
So I'm guessing your plan didn't work out? Did you ever figure out a way to get this to work?

Re: Looking for a OBD II software solution
How are you connecting it to the vehicle? I'm guessing a bluetooth adapter. If so, where did you get it. I'm looking for something like this.
|
Re: Looking for a OBD II software solution
yes a bluetooth adapter, i got one off of ebay earlier this summer. i have the link for it posted earlier in this thread. I was looking for software that will give me information such as mpg's and such, but i cannot find any.
|
Re: Looking for a OBD II software solution
well the easy fix to find mpg is fill up, take down your miles, fill up again and take your miles then the miles traveled / gallons of the second fill up = miles per gallon.

Re: Looking for a OBD II software solution
yea newer 8 cyl engines turn off cylinders when power isnt needed to increase mpg.
|
Re: Looking for a OBD II software solution
Some of the recent Honda 6-cylinder engines can also deactivate down to 4. Most manufacturers are afraid to go below 4, however, because engine dynamics change quite a bit at 2 cylinders.
Back on to PPCs, I would love to be able to have a wireless always-available display possibility in my car, but the autoenginuity people claim that the more intricate sensors (beyond simple OBD-II) require a full-speed USB connection: http://www.autoenginuity.com/products-hardware.html I wonder if this is snake oil talk from them, or if it's valid. I also wonder if the bluetooth adapters from others can be left plugged in? Would be fun to just hop in and pull out the PPC, set it on the console and go :) |
Re: Looking for a OBD II software solution
There isn’t that much information that would require a full out USB connection. I left my Bluetooth OBDII adapter on overnight and never had any problems, but I eventually installed a switch from Radio Shack to turn it on and off manually when it was plugged in. Now I just leave it on and flip the switch whenever I need it.

Re: Looking for a OBD II software solution
Those Honda engines he was talking about... They can go from 6 to 4 to even 3 cylinders...
Next time you are with your blue tooth adapter, can you look at who makes it? I really want to get one of these... I used to work as a mechanic and being able to do this would make it so much easier than having to use the OBD II scanner... What software are you using again? I assume it is not freeware? |
Re: Looking for a OBD II software solution
The OBDII Bluetooth Adapter is a generic ELM327 scanner from ebay, and I am using freeware, I'm using OBDGauge. Here is the link to the OBDII adapter:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/elm32...motiveQ5fTools I tried ScanTool from http://www.autoenginuity.com/ but it didnt work. On the treo 800w it ran, but failed at connecting. On the DIamond it doesnt even run. install it, and when i click on it i get the rainbow-colored circle spinning and it keeps doing that forever. |
Re: Looking for a OBD II software solution
Cool... I really appreciate that.. What all can you get from this set up? RPM? I mean is it really in-depth or just basic stuff?

That is awesome... Thank you so much... What phone do you have right now?

Re: Looking for a OBD II software solution
I have the HTC Diamond. OBDgauge worked with my Treo also, but it was very buggy at time, like losing connection and the only way to reestablish it is to reset both devices. It works perfectly fin on the Diamond though.
|
Re: Looking for a OBD II software solution
That's what I wanted to hear... I have a Touch Pro... So if it works on the Diamond, it should work on the TP..
|
Re: Looking for a OBD II software solution
Yes sir! let me know if you get one cuz I would like to see in you can get ScanTool working on it
|
Re: Looking for a OBD II software solution
I will... I just need to buy the Blue tooth adapter..
