activesync questions

Hey fellow PPCGeeks,

I had a question/problem i was hoping someone can help me out with . I did a search for this but didnt really find an answer. I generally backup my contacts and appointments using PIMbackup. The problem that i have is that when i use something other then activesync to restore my information and then i connect to activesync, i get double contacts and appointments. Is there anyway for this not to happen. I would love to be able to sync with my comptuer and keep my information updated but i toy around with my phone so much that i often have to reset (or reflash) my phone while not at home.

Also, whats the best way to sync my phone with 3 computers. I have my comptuer at home, my laptop and my work pc. Whenever i try it says i can only have 2 relationships and i have to delete one to add another....any help is greatly appreicated

Re: activesync questions

it looks like syncing that info with a server would work much better for you. do you have access to an exchange server? or maybe you can find a free/cheap exchange service online? that way you sync the phone and the computer both directly to the server and never have any conflicts..

Re: activesync questions

What if you disable contact sync in your ActiveSync settings, and use your backups for keeping a set on your PC. Unless you work with then a lot on your PC, there may not be any need to sync them all the time. That is the way I do it, I don't use Outlook on my PC, I unpack my backup on the PC if I want to, or just use DashWire.

I can try that, i used to use Mail2web for push email and address backing up but i stopped when i noticed the double contact info. For some reason i t wasnt doing it in the older version of activesync but is doing it now or from what i can remember. But your saying that if i sycn my PC and my PPC with an exchange server there shouldnt be any back ups when i connect my PPC to my desktop?

Im not sure if i understand you when u say use your backups?....I dont really use them a lot just that i tend to get new numbers/emails everyday it seems and before i know it my address book is obsolete. I would think it would be a simple option as having an option of not checking the entries and if you have an exact match then have a prompt " Do you want to replace, ignore or make a duplicate" or something around those lines.....

THanks to both of you for your ideas....hopefully i can get this fixed

Re: activesync questions

What I do is to back up contacts with PIMBackup and Sprite Backup as a safeguard, but, when restoring backups, I NEVER restore the personal databases (contacts and calendar) but rather let ActiveSync restore them from Outlook on the PC to prevent this issue.

I had this happen as well. When you do your restoration from your backup, Activesync sees those as new entries added to your existing data in everything... contacts, calendar, tasks, and notes. I would say as long as you have daily access to an activesync pc, then just go with that for backup of all of your contact, calendar, and other information.
