Tutorial: Making CABs using WinCE Cab Manager

I DID NOT OPTIMIZE THE SCREENSHOTS - THIS PAGE MAY TAKE A WHILE TO LOAD!!

This is a basic guide to help you with making cabs for files and folders you want to be automatically moved. I use it to restore system sounds, ringtones, and themes after a hard-reset. You can also add regedits so you don't have to enter them manually!

WCE CM is not free, but it has a usable trial. I suggest you use it when you need it. You can find a description and download here: http://www.ocpsoftware.com/products.php?nm=cecabmgr

To make a cab, do the following.

Open up the program, and press File>New.

Once the wizard comes up, press next, enter your information, and the rest of the wizard is self-explanatory.

You should now have a blank box with a tree on the left.

Now, all you do is drag'n'drop your files.

Note: to save time, select all the files that will go to the same directory and drop them into the program.

Then, make sure you complete all the information on all 3 tabs of the import file dialog.
From here, you can just follow the screenshots

Its not too bad at all.

Hope this helps!!

Post any questions you have down below. I'll try to answer them.

AND as always, do this at your own risk! I don't see why there'd be any issue, but I recommend you don't do this if you don't know how to install programs on your phone :)

Well, for regedits, all you need to do is place the entry in the proper location. For example, if you have a hack thats in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Monkey\Hack.reg, you need to make that path.

yea but it does not have a drop down arrow in HKLM (using the example you gave), so how can i make it edit the registry???

Re: Tutorial: Making CABs using WinCE Cab Manager

How would i replace files that are currently in use on the mobil device? I get an error when running the cab file saying installation failed (I am assuming it is because the files are in use because when I try and copy them over directly I get that message)

Edit: must have been something I did wrong on the first cab, I got it working now.

Very nice tutorial Sauman. My +1 for a sticky, and an upgrade in rank in the militia.

Hmm... I'm not sure why there would be an issue. I copy system sounds over without any errors.

Maybe you could try putting less files in the .cab and find exactly which one is causing the error.

Re: Tutorial: Making CABs using WinCE Cab Manager

I have been getting a few requests on making custom uninstallers for apps that won't fully uninstall. The only thing I can do if I have the cab file is tell you exactly what was changed during installation so you can go through and manually remove it.

Drag the file to the WinCE Cab Manager window when you are in the FILES box, then select where you want to store the .exe file. Then, you can go to the SHORTCUTS box and add a new shortcut. Create a name for it and you should be able to select the .exe file it points to. Save and install :)

Here's an example for start icons:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\Shell\StartInfo\Start\ Phone.lnk]
"Icon"="\Application Data\My App\newphoneicon.png"

The .png file can be anywhere.

Hrm... I don't think it is possible to make a folder without putting files in there. However, you can create dummy text files in each of the folders you want, and then add an XML to the CAB to automatically delete the files after installing.

In WinCE CAB Manager there is an area to specify a Post-XML file (on the same window that you can rename your CAB file)

Here is an example of the code you would need to delete the file "initprov.lnk" in the folder "\Windows\startup\"

Code:

<characteristic type="FileOperation">
    <characteristic type="\Windows\startup\initprov.lnk"  translation="install">
        <characteristic type="Delete">
            <parm name="ForceDelete" />
        </characteristic>
    </characteristic>

You select the main registry folder, then right click on it and select "New Key..."

Remember - a KEY is like a folder, it has more registry keys or entries inside of it.

Once you get to the proper key directory, you just right click in the white space and select "New..." and whatever type of entry you want.

Re: Tutorial: Making CABs using WinCE Cab Manager

My first attempt and for some reason I thought reg files would input the path for me. I got it though. I went ahead and added the whole key cause I wasnt sure if I could add one change of a DWord value without deleting the rest of the key information.
