I was using Slick past few days and It has a crazy mem. Leak for me. I was starting with 56 and in less then 30 mins i was down to 70%. Crazy stuff. I liked it a lot too.

I use IM plus and it does always stay on in the background. As long as you turn on the option and it does cost. But its a one time fee then after that free upgrades, it even have myspace instant messager on it also

Slick was good. But the newest version sends blank im's to aim users that use pidgin and trillian. Also msn might be messed up also, didn't read those threads. The developer hasn't responded on slicks forums and we can't downgrade to slick .41. I'm shopping around for an new client so I installed jive talk today and its looking pretty good.
