fring works pretty well for me. free app as well. I use it for AIM, MSN, yahoo, and google talk. it handle more than that, too.

i didnt like that it didnt support google talk which is waht my fiance uses exclusively on her blackberry.

I like the IM client that came standard with the TP on Sprint. It works server side, as opposed to clientside like most of the other AIM clients, which means that even if you are out of service, you are still considered online and IMs get sent to the AIM servers. When you get reception again you receive all the IMs that were queued up for you. I find that this saves the most batteries for me since the client doesn't have to be constantly logged onto data.

Palringo, Fring, or Nimbuzz for the free ones. I also like to use the native Skype application for Skype communication. Jivetalk WAS awesome, but then they stopped developing the WinMo client...and now I hate them.
IM+ or Agile for paid ones. |

Palringo! Even on 1x it will perform fairly well. I like how it always reconnects after your done with a call. A lot of other IM apps I've used had issues doing this.
