All programs that use non sms forms of communicating via aim will 99% of the time require you to stay connected. That being said there are programs out there that let you use sms for texting, in fact I believe aim lets you send a text message to number xxx to retreive your blist and then you can go from there but not possitive. But as I said most applications will require you to be online and stay online, ie, IM+, Agile messenger, and the UK aim As for the notifications, it depends on what program you are using.I use IM+ and if i remember correctly there is no notification when the program is in the background, but you will be notified of an IM when the window is active PH
