Announcing: Chameleon-240 Version 2

Recap:
  • Chameleon-240-QVGA is a custom WeatherPanel theme optimized for square-screen devices (240x240) and one-handed operation using WP-Pilot. At the heart of Chameleon-240-v2 is the integrated button bar, which offers key WeatherPanel functionality:

    http://story.nventure.com/pics/Cham-240_Help.png
Changes in version 2:
  • ◊ Smoothed out the "crumpled" backgrounds (got my iron working)
    ◊ Modified the entire theme to work well with or without the "Enable Clear Type Fonts" setting
    ◊ Replaced "rain" with "precipitation" throughout the theme
    ◊ Added "feels like" to the first two layouts (layouts "a" and "b")
    ◊ Improved the lunar layout (layout "g")
    ◊ Improved the "Details" pop-up - added lunar phase to the forecast section (the Details pop-up shows the "current" conditions initially - hit right on the 5-way to see the forecast)
    ◊ 174K bytes smaller than version 1
Features:
  • ◊ Compact (61 pixels).
    ◊ Integrated button bar with eleven functions - optimized for WP-Pilot.
    ◊ Easily choose from twelve background colors to fit with any Today theme, plus a translucent (Ghost) background to let your Today theme show through.
    ◊ Customized pop-up windows - including a pop-up help screen.
    ◊ Customized detail windows - completely 240x240 compatible.
Color and Layout control:

Installation instructions are included in the zip file (Readme.txt).

This theme takes 521K of storage space

Enjoy!

Re: WeatherPanel Freaks: Chameleon-240 Version 2

Any ideas why I am getting these strange values? Chameleon v1 worked fine. I just copied the new v2 folder in the:
Program Files\MarsWare\WeatherPanel\Themes FOLDER

http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o...k/wperrors.jpg

I deleted WP folder and re-installed but to no avail...any ideas?

Also, wow do you get the traffic camera to show up?

Pibe38 01-13-2007 11:27 PM

Have you replaced the DLL file to fix the moon phase issue? That's the only time I've seen something like that, when that DLL file had not been replaced.

Idea # 1: You're suffering from the WeatherPanel Moon problem. See this post.

Idea # 2: WeatherPanel can retrieve radar images from any URL. It didn't take folks long to realize that it will retrieve any type of image on a schedule. Traffic cameras are a natural. Here's what to do:
  • 1. Surf the net and find the image you want (it should be an image that's updated periodically, on a schedule). In the browser, right-click on the image and choose Properties. Highlight the Address (URL) and copy it to the clipboard.

    2. Open the radars.txt file on your device (either with PWord, or copy it to your PC and open it with Notepad). It can be found in the \Program Files\MarsWare\Weatherpanel folder.

    3. At the top of the file, insert a new line and type a heading for your URL, like "Traffic" or something.

    4, Insert another line after your heading, and paste your URL from the clipboard. For example, I've added these to my radars.txt file:
    5. Save the file, and copy it back to your device, if necessary.

    6. In the WeatherPanel settings, select your city and click Edit. Then click the Weather Images button. Choose Add New, then select the name you just added.
Another thing: After WeatherPanel has collected a few images, it displays a little play button on the image. When clicked, it will animate all of the images it has... :D

Awesome, thanks!

jdavis24cw 01-14-2007 07:12 PM

I recently installed this for the first time and for some reason the option to change city is not there...could you possibly tell me the reason for this...i have tried everything....thanks in advance.....this is a great program byt he way :)

PerfectHybrid 01-14-2007 07:25 PM

Hey try this ( I had the same issue)...

go to Menu>Preferences>Today Settings>Weather Panel (make sure it is highlighted)>Then click 'Options'>Then click on the tab 'Display' on the bottom>scroll down if you have to and there should be a box that is checked called 'Don't display arrows'--go ahead an unchck that and see if that works.

It does depend on what version you are running, this worked with mine and I am up to date with all the files that the site provided so. Hope this helps if it doesn't let us know.

Fixed: Little Bug

I found a small bug in the Moon layout (layout "g") where it was skipping a day. It's fixed (see below). You have two options for installing:
  • 1. Download just the "g" layouts attached to this post, and copy them into your Chameleon-240-v2 folder.

    2. Download the whole theme (from the first post), and copy it over the old one.
Bug :angry7: (notice that it skipped Saturday):

Wow, i know what this feels like! I just downloaded version 2 and now the update is already out. I don't plan to use the moon view anyway so i don't think i'll get this version.

eyeballz 01-15-2007 07:56 PM

I learned a very valuable lesson.

Dont use PPCUPX on this program :)

However it works great on the palm threaded sms stuff.

Me likey! As always excellent work Storyr!!!!!!

Hayabusa1300cc 01-16-2007 09:50 PM

this makes WP one hundred percent better for me. one question though, is there a way to make the color option stay? and how so I get radar pics to come up?

ImCoKeMaN 01-16-2007 10:26 PM

The options for locking in the color is listed on the page where the Chameleon (version 1) was first posted on this site (page 6 of This other weather panel thread), but I don't expect anyone to really know that or dig that far so I'll post the info here too...

(Mods - feel free to put this in the first post of this thread if you like)

To maintain your favorite Chameleon-240 color/layout combination (after setting changes, soft resets, etc), set your WeatherPanel layout settings as follows:

The layouts are coded as Chameleon_XXL, where XX = the color code, and L = the layout code.

Color codes:

01 = Chameleon (green)
02 = Lime Light (lime green)
03 = Blue Man Group (blue)
04 = Sky Bound (light blue)
05 = Seeing Red (red)
06 = Pretty in Pink (pink)
07 = Fresh Squeezed (orange)
08 = Milk Chocolate (Brown)
09 = Coppertone (tan)
10 = Off-White (white)
11 = Back in Black (black)
12 = Gray Area (gray)
13 = Ghost (translucent)

Layout codes:

a = Date banner
b = Current conditions
c = Four day forecast
d = Five day forecast
e = 24 hour temp/precipitation
f = Radar
g = Lunar schedule

In the WeatherPanel settings, set the Layout file name for the desired color/layout codes. Example: For blue/four day forecast. Choose Chameleon_03c

------
The radar is explained on the first page of this thread (post 6 to be specific) so I won't copy that one :wink:

Hayabusa1300cc 01-16-2007 11:32 PM

No digging required - it's in the Readme.txt file that comes with the theme...

ImCoKeMaN 01-17-2007 12:28 AM

Now I know why i didn't see it then. I downloaded a few themes and when i extracted them on my PC they each created subdirectories, but the readme.txt wasn't in the subdirectory. The readme.txt i have is for the stealth theme since i extracted that after chameleon. Oops.

Hey - that's a good point :)
From now on, I'm going to give the readme's unique names... :idea1:

Pibe38 01-17-2007 02:02 AM

I vote for DontReadMe.txt

:P

Hayabusa1300cc 01-17-2007 08:12 AM

I happened to click the readme last night and to my surprise the information was there. but come on, who reads 'readme' anyways? lol :D

Hey Storyr, as you can see by the screen shot below the weather alert shows up on the left side of WP (under the cloud) but not in the integrated button bar. I'm sure that I don't have a file in the correct place...but which file?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Coz

Hey Coz - The alert graphic you see on the left (red exclamation point) is built-in WeatherPanel functionality. To get Chameleon-240 to indicated alerts in it's button bar, you need to install the ChamAlert alert icon folder, included in the zip file. You read the Readme.txt, right? :laughing6:

Code:

5.  Install the alert icon files as follows:

    5.1  Unzip the ChamAlert files (use folder names)

    5.1  Using the same method as above, copy the
        ChamAlert folder (and it's contents) into
        each icon folder that you use. For example,
        if you use the Default and Dedication41 icon
        sets, your folders should look like:

        - Program Files
          - MarsWare
            - WeatherPanel
              - data
              - Icons
                - Dedication41
                  + ChamAlert
                  + Mini
                - Default
                  + ChamAlert

        Note: Some icon folders, depending on the install,
              may be installed in a location other than the
              example above.

CozBoogie 01-17-2007 01:51 PM

Of course I read the ReadMe.txt . However the animated icon set that I'm using was located in Program Files/WeatherPanel. Instead of MarsWare/WeatherPanel... So after discovering that all is well and I thank you for your help.
Thanks mucho!
Late,
Coz

I hope I am not the only one but I always read the Readme.txt before I install anything.

Thanks OP, makes WP alot better. One question, is there any way to remove layouts from the cycle? So when I click the change layout button I don't have to see the lunar phase if I don't want to. Tried removing the layout files, but that just makes it throw an error of invalid layout file.

Thanks again for great work.

Yes, you can - but you have to alter the layout file itself. Removing the files will only cause problems (as you found out). Some background info:

There are 7 layouts (a, b, c, e, f, g), and each layout file has a pointer to the next. The last layout, "g", points back to the first - "a".

Each layout file is duplicated 13 times - one for each color (01-13). Thus, the layout files are named accordingly: Chameleon_01a.wpl is color 1, layout "a", and so on.

The moon layout (the one you want to skip) is layout "g". So, to skip it, you'll need to modify the previous layout ("f") to point to "a", instead of "g". If you want to do this for all colors, you'll need to modify all 13 layout "f"'s (Chameleon_01f.wpl - Chameleon_13f.wpl).

Here's the mod: This example is for color 01. Open file Chameleon_01f.wpl. In the "Layout changer" section (near the top), modify the reference to point to "a" instead of "g".

Code:

- Layout changer
;WINDOW-0
113,43,14,14
#VOID#
Chameleon_01g.wpl
0,0,W,H
CHANGELAYOUT

becomes
Code:

- Layout changer
;WINDOW-0
113,43,14,14
#VOID#
Chameleon_01a.wpl
0,0,W,H
CHANGELAYOUT

Sorry for being so long-winded - you've probably already figured this out... :)

PootsworthIII 01-25-2007 10:37 AM

Awesome! Thanks. I had not figured it out.

Updated background

I started using the Windows Vista PE theme for WA2 (Aero Dark), so I decided to modify one of the Chameleon-240 backgounds to match the theme exactly. So here it is:

http://story.nventure.com/pics/aero_screen_01.png

The colors match the Aero Dark theme, plus I gave the button bar more of a "glassy" look:

http://story.nventure.com/pics/aero_cham_02.png

It replaces the gray background #12 (bk_12.png) - but you can rename it and replace any background you wish, such as pink - not that there's anything wrong with pink :lol:

Just drop the file into your Chameleon-240 theme folder on your device.

Enjoy!

wingzero 01-26-2007 10:12 AM

Hey thanks storyr. Nice work.

bossmansmith 01-29-2007 07:14 PM

i like the cham look but was wondering if anyone who already knows how to build a theme can make something more like this. i only need 3 days worth of forecast and this idea one is apx 45 vs 60 pix high (i photoshoped capture of orginal so that both would be same fonts and stuff just a tad different layout)

any help on this would be greatly appreciated since my today screen is already overcrowded - thanks alot

storyr,

I like the look of your re-designed Aero colors. I use the WB Aero theme too. However, when I use it it seems to change most of the text in the WP theme to black. The black text is virtually unreadable against the grayish background. How do I make it so the text is all white?

Thanks lg. Which background did you replace? 12 or a different one? Some of the background layouts use black fonts, others use white. The last one (13) uses the Today text color.

Thanks the only thing I can think of...

lgreenberg 01-29-2007 09:33 PM

Ah that must be it.

I replaced (6) - pink per your suggestion. LOL

I guess I'll have to find another color I don't plan on using that uses white text.
