GoogleMaps Mobile ver 2.0 Now Available
Hadn't seen this posted yet. Includes a "My Location" feature that's supposed to work without GPS.

My Location doesn't seem to be working on my HTC Touch.
|
I get "Your current location is temporarily unavailable". Looks like not all towers are talking to Google. If anyone on the Verizon network actually gets the tower-based location to work, please post.
|
doesn't work for sprint/htc touch:(
-mark |
not on my mogul either. But Its a beta... we can hope right?
|
This is a limited release beta and the My Location feature will only work on selected Windows Mobile phones...looks like the Mogul and Touch weren't selected...
|
It might need that gps upgrade firmware that sprint keeps talking about before working...
|
no luck for me on my sprint mogul
Is My Location (beta) available for my device? At this time, My Location (beta) is available for these devices:
|
Same here on my Mogul. It says temporarily... maybe it will work soon? hehe
|
how is it supposed to find location? If it's going to triangulate, expect to get knocked off like more than 15 miles or something.
|
i like the new features it has, more animation, etc.
Cant wait for the my location to work, that would be awesome. |
It looks like the functionality is there, it is just disabled for our phones. Maybe we can enable it in the registry or something? I looked under the software keys for Google and there was't much there.
|
I think Google is implimenting that capability in stages, probably as they test the specific devices, they will activate it. The good thing, is that from the way things look, they only need to 'flick the switch' so to speak, not making us install a new version again every few days!!!
|
I have a feeling this was designed with GSM towers in mind.
The development seems to have been done by a UK team, which is almost entirely GSM. While this doesn't mean CDMA is no good, it might be a while. Mobile GMaps for java used to get coordinates off of A-GPS via a Sprint server. You had to allow the program to get by registering your ESN with the Sprint Developer network. Maybe it's something similar to that. If it is, it may only be a matter of time. Any AT&T/T-Mobile users get the My location feature to work? I don't think any Sprint users have (I haven't). At least not with the Mogul. I don't have any hard facts. These are just my musings and opinions. |
Tryin this now ....good find
|
I think that TeleNav used this agps in some of the sprint phones because it worked great indoors on my Sanyo 7400. It was always very accurate and I never had a problem getting a location even in malls or in my house or at work. I don't think regular gps works that well, and the article I read said that google's tech works better than regular GPS indoors.

Google Maps 2 with new "MyLocation" feature.
Google has launched version 2 of Google Maps Mobile. This beta version contains a feature called "mylocation" which attempts to use triangulation, etc to determine your location rather than GPS.
I installed it on my 6700, doesn't seem to work. Oh well. http://www.google.com/gmm/mylocation.html?hl=en |
I have no luck as well on my 6700. Keeps saying "Your current location is temporarily unavailable".
|
Same for my 6800
|
Same Here
NO DICE not working on my 6800
|
Dont fret, I believe this will be fixed in the 6800 ROM that comes out Q1 of 2008. Sprint is going to include EVDO Rev. A compatability as well as many other fixes for the 6800. I think the 6700 will have an update for the EVDO reason... It will be like christmas all over again
|
what would the rom fix with the added GPS have to do with fixing it though. I thought the my location feature was suppose to find your location with the cell tower information and be an estimate. All i know is my co worker put google maps on his AT&T 8525 and was able to use my location and it pissed me off lol
|
just tried it to doesnt work on my 6800 either

Just to clarify Google MyLocation does not use GPS to estimate your location. A GPS is useless to Google MyLocation. Google MyLocation is to estimate your location WITHOUT a GPS. A GPS is of no consequence to the estimation of your location in reference to Google MyLocation.
Can I say this any other way? Google MyLocation uses a database of individual IDs from Cell Towers on a GLOBAL level. It IS NOT GLOBAL POSITIONING. The program calculates how many cell towers your handset is in contact with, determines the strength, and ESTIMATES your location within 3 miles. It is NOT AGPS. It is NOT GPS. The purpose of MyLocation is to give you NEIGHBORHOOD LEVEL positioning. Having an actual GPS receiver is a total moot point. I'm not trying to be a smart ass, but there has been some assumptions about this program without any knowledge of the project itself. This ridiculous considering Google has a white paper published on the program and how it works. It uses your CELLULAR ANTENNA not a GPS antenna. PS- If MyLocation does not work for you, it is because the database is incomplete. Google is adding new towers as they get the IDs. |
|
And this means jack squat to 6800 users since the my location feature is not working right now.
|
All that means is we have to wait a bit for them to test and pass out devices, I have found the rest of the tweaks and changes in the app to be great!! It is faster, looks sleaker, and has more functionability!!! When looking at all the added features, I think waiting for the location feature is a small price to pay. I am sure that following threads like this as devices clear testing, we will learn about it very soon (I test mine daily LOL)!!!
|
hmm
Is there a straight up mapping program...free, that you can put onto our PPC's that you can just type in an address and have it show a location. Something like mapquest that just works off of a map system. I have a trusty map book that I use on trips everywhere...it would be nice to eliminate the book by just having mapping software on my phone...
Im easy to please and would be happy with just that. |
Just download the app this forum is based on, that is exactly what it can do. Windows Live Search can do it as well, I am not sure if it is as good as Googlemaps, but I think it can do what your looking for!

Ahhh....OK....got me there....sorry. How about TomTom, I wonder if you could download the software, and use the maps without using the GPS function.
Anyone know if that would work for caseys500? |
google says the accuracy on it is bad, but my friends blackberry on sprint had him in the correct corner of his house (30-80 ft accuracy). I hope something happens to make it work for th 6800

Looking for the experts here!!!!

I just ran across this in the Google forums, a couple people got My Location working on T-Mobile DASH. They directed people to this link:
http://mobile.surrealnetworks.com/AppUnlockReg.htm wanting us to make this reg entry... In order run unsigned programs you must app unlock your device or add/change the following registry value using PHM Registry Editor for Smartphone or PPC add HKLM>Security>Policies>Policies value = 0000101B DWORD = 1 they included a CAB to do it automatically (I will include here as well!!). I have not tried this, and do not suggest it unless you really know what your doing!!!!! Which is why I posted it here....could a few of the resident PPC gurus take a look and let the rest of us know what they think...is it safe? Feasible? Should this work? I look forward to finding out more...thanks guys!!!! |
I dunno if that cab is for a specific phone but I didn't care. I installed in on my Bell Touch (Vogue) and no go. Still N/A
|
No luck with the reg entry. I applied it, soft reset, and even reinstalled google maps. The search continues.

I was hoping somebody here would have some information on this. I was hoping (but not expecting) that this would work. Oh well....back to waiting.
(but it is good to know more devices are working with it now, makes the wait seem more bearable!!!! LOL) |

The larger issue of My Location is dependent on Google possible implementing an API for CDMA networks to use their tower triangulation, which of course Sprint and Verizon can do. Whether or not this is possible on WM CDMA devies remains to be seen. My Advice: If you're a Touch or Mogul owner: wait for your GPS update next year. Treo users should wait for the 800w. But I highly doubt anyone is going to "hack" this feature. It is more about the phone reporting the Cell ID and pulling Tower ID--these are API and network dependent features, not registry entries that can be turned "on or "off". |
