new version of opera mini! no java needed!

Opera Software launched a native version of
Opera Mini 5 beta for Windows Mobile 5- and
6-based handsets. By integrating Opera Mini with the Windows
Mobile platform, Opera is able to deliver an
optimized version of the popular Opera Mini
browser that dramatically improves
performance and the overall user experience.
While Opera Mini traditionally requires Java, the new Windows Mobile version does not,
which means that Opera Mini will work on any
Windows Mobile phone. The Opera Mini 5 beta for Windows Mobile
includes the same rich feature set as the
Java-based version. Renowned features,
including tabbed browsing, the password
manager, bookmarks and Speed Dial, are
built-in to deliver convenience while on-the- go. One of Opera Mini ’s major benefits is that it compresses data traffic by up to 90 percent,
resulting in significantly improved page-
loading and speed. This results in a
dramatically reduced data load, which can
translate to lower browsing costs when on a
pay-per-MB data plan or when on expensive roaming. "Windows Mobile deserves a mobile browser
that looks better, handles better and delivers
better than the default browser," said Dag
Olav Norem, Vice President of Products,
Opera Software. "Even though Opera has 50
million satisfied Opera Mini users, we always seek ways to improve our browser for each
and every mobile phone user out there. Now,
we are pleased to offer the world ’s most popular mobile Web browser as a native
Windows Mobile application." Download Windows Mobile 5 and 6 users can download
Opera Mini directly to their phone for free
from m.opera.com/next/ or read more at www.opera.com/mini/next/. Java is not required on the mobile phone for this
download.

It renders a page fully zoomed. That gets quite annoying.

anyone notice its not progressing to the next page. Kinda like the first beta. if you are in ppcgeeks for example, and try to click last page of a thread, it keeps bring up the same page. Also, it took 5 attempts to save the password. Like the new setup and I'm sure its going to get better. seems to be prevalent on ppggeeks site but is working well on some other sites. strange

Im intrested in your opinion with this version. Ive had a few problems trying to login to some websites. Here on the geeks, I had to click "login" 6 times before it finally took. Im guessing its server issues. It generally seems like opera mobiles little brother :)

thanks. well for me its behaving the same as the first operamini5 beta, before beta2. I really like the fact that it's stand alone. Hopefully somebody can tweak this up a little for us. couple other things I noticed, can't save anything to storage, and I tried downloading once and nothing happened.

First. Thanks for the cab.
I like the fact that it doesn't have it's own keyboard anymore. That think would not go away in landscape and took up half the screen. Second, it would go nuts once in a while while using facebook at least and repeat a letter like 10 times while you are typing. At least for me it did. I love the password storage in the newest version. I love the fact that it opens faster than when it required java. My biggest and most important dislike is that it is slower...to me it seems that it takes almost 2 times as long if not longer to open a page. I will have to wait for my wife to get home so I can compare the two between our 2 phones but that is my initial take on it. The speed almost seems same as regular 9.5 or whatever MR X included in his latest 2.5 release. Is anybody else getting slower load times from this than in the beta 2 that was out?

Im not seeing the slow speeds you are. In all honesty, Im super impressed with how fast it is. Any chance you were just having a funky connection at the time? Id be interested to see the comparison results when you get a chance to do it. please post back if ya can. thx,

wow it's super fast!. renders pages great. having a little trouble getting it to remember google reader logins (installed to flash card). very promising... will be my default browser upon next release (if not sooner).

it loads super super fast, its awesome.....this thing loaded igadget.com (engadget.com) in record time..

I can't say enough about this release :)

Re: new version of opera mini! no java needed!

Still only one zoom level & you can't read text with it zoomed out.

It still has the problem from earlier versions where you click a link & instead of opening it, it reloads the current page (this annoys me so much that I rarely use it).

This version has promise (it's definitely fast), but I will still stick with the version of Opera 9.7 with the zoom slider on the bottom of the screen for now.

I have noticed this too. also when trying to post it seems like hit or miss lol.
And has anyone tried to upload pics to your albums here? It doesn't give the option to get a file from sd card only gives the option to upload a pic from Documents which is really a pain because I don't have my pics stored there. Irritating!

yep, cannot save anything to storage either. Couple people told me that its working perfect for them with respects to clicking links. gonna try installing on a fresh flash and see if it makes a difference for me.

stratch that... Just hard reset and installed from a fresh flash. links are working, passwords are saving. loving it :) sorry for the false alarm.

Is there any way to import my bookmarks/start page icons to Mini5 from my Opera10?

animez 03-04-2010 08:42 PM

Wirelessly posted (Opera/9.80 (J2ME/MIDP; Opera Mini/5.0.3521/958; U; en) Presto/2.4.15)

Just installed this, then promptly uninstall Opera 10 beta. This browser is so much faster but seems to retain the same look and functionality. Seems like mini does a much better job of registering clicks on link with my big ol' fingers. ;)

Well I had to test this against beta 2 and they both have the same load times for pages. The only difference is that beta 2 renders the page initially faster but they both finish loading at the same time.

So far I like this a lot. It's fast, scrolls nicely, and has none of the checkerboarding all the other browsers have.

Re: new version of opera mini! no java needed!

I guess I am going to have to try a hard reset to see if that will work for me. I have tried a bunch of times to post from mini today and had no luck at all...dang it wish I had sashimi now lol!

BUGGY!!! mobile site redirects with mobile view off (whats so hard about including a user-agent switcher like in opera 8.6x?). and when typing with touch screen the cursor moves back to the begining of the line, they cant seem to get either of these right tho i like how fast and light it is

Hi, I was able to choose links again but occassionally still cant progress to another link. Seems to occur with drop down menus alot. No luck on the storage card. Hopefully there will be a another release with a couple fixes.

Re: new version of opera mini! no java needed!

There definitely are some remaining quirks. I'm assuming the failure to addresses the long term issues is related to the effort put into making this a stand alone application independent of Java. Hopefully we will see these knocked off soon. Even so, Mini remains the most usable of mobile browsers for my needs.

This should do it. The only problem which I don't mind TOO much is that your bookmarks on the main screen won't work anymore. If you click them they'll just open up the app and you have to put in the link or click the embedded bookmarks again.

Anyone tried the procedure in the link above?

So, this is great, but 2 big problems.

1) Need a way to make this default (i.e. open clicked links from, say, email)

2) Font Size is WAY too big, even on small. I'm surprised there hasn't been more discussion about that. On my VGA Touch Pro, it borders on unusable.

Maybe someone could find a hack for a smaller font size?

dsteinschneider 03-05-2010 12:06 PM

Re: new version of opera mini! no java needed!

Interesting, I loaded it up on my Touch Pro and thought, "great, I don't have to go in the registry to make the fonts larger". In fact, they seem to have sized them exactly the size I was using in the Java based beta. I love that I can run both, I've been thinking about dedicating the Java Mini 5 beta to use for Microsoft CRM Mobile and bumping up the fonts to an even larger size.

there's no discussion because the font size is better than java based om5. :)
You must have perfect vision or strong contacts/glasses. I've always felt that the font was terrible adn thus one of the biggest negatives of om5 in the past. Now it's perfect! Or maybe it's because i have a tp2 with a much larger screen and wvga resolution...

Well, I do have good vision, but font size is huge on my VGA TP.

For example, here's www.verizon.com on my phone. I'm holding it vertically and positioned the top of the red bar at the top of my screen and then all the way over to the left.

Here's a screenshot using Mini WM and Mini Java. Huge difference in how much is on the screen and the Java version is perfectly legible. Fonts on WM set to small. Fonts on Java are custom set in the registry.

Can someone with a VGA screen confirm my WM fonts are "normal"?

gcianc 03-05-2010 01:18 PM

Re: new version of opera mini! no java needed!

The Opera Min 5 for WM "small" font is still a little too LARGE... there should be an "extra small" choice for WVGA/VGA users with good vision.

Regardless of what windows system font size is used in Settings.

Re: new version of opera mini! no java needed!

to be fair, that verizon screenshot you posted has a lot font on that page that's bold and larger than standard font on most pages... but i agree, there hsould be more options. It would be cool to have multiple zoom level choices in the settings like with om10. The problem with om5 java is the font looks too compressed if that makes sense... the size doesn't bother me so much, it's that it looks like it's washed out.

system font size start>settings>system>screen>text size

Ok, I remember seeing that once.

That setting seems to make very little difference inside of Opera Mini 5 WM.
