Re: The **Official** nanoGroove thread

Frequently Asked Questions

Q:
How is this different/better than Pandora?
A: Pandora allows you to listen to music IT thinks you might like while nanoGroove taps into the extensive online database of Grooveshark to play what YOU KNOW you like.

Q: Is nanoGroove the official Grooveshark application for Windows Mobile.
A: It's such a good app, both functionally and visually that I can see where you would think that. However, nanoGroove is in no way affiliated with Grooveshark.

Q: Where do I go to make playlists I can import into nanoGroove.
A: Visit Grooveshark.com and setup a free account. Once you setup playlists of your favorite music, you can import them into nanoGroove on your phone. Simply press "view" in the bottom right corner of your screen and then select "Playlists" from the pop-up menu. On first use, you will need to enter your Grooveshark login information. Once it logs into your Grooveshark account, press refresh and then select the playlist from the drop down menu.

Q: Okay, so I went and got myself a new Grooveshark account. It's a pretty cool site. I can't believe I have not been using that site everyday! I made some playlists and follow all the steps in your FAQ to get them loaded into nanoGroove but they are not showing up. What did I do wrong?
A: Great! I am glad you are enjoying Grooveshark. I use it myself at home, work and now with nanoGroove I even use it in the car! As for your playlist problem, don't be too concerned about it. You can usually create a playlist and seconds later load that list into nanoGroove. However, it has been reported on occasion that it takes some time to get from Grooveshark to nanoGroove. So just be patient and try it again later.

Q: How many playlists can I load?
A: At the moment, you can only load 10 playlists from Grooveshark. Note that it will only load the first 10 in your list. This limit has been removed in the new patch.

Q: I have a suggestion to improve this application, will my ideas be taken into consideration?
A: Absolutely. Please post any ideas to improve this application in this thread and a compiled list will be passed on to the developer. If you really want to contact nanoGroove yourself, please visit the website linked in post #1. But remember, the more emails he has to read through, the less time he has to implement the ideas you have.

Q: I use the radio feature in Grooveshark that utilizes a Pandora style selection of music for me. Does this work in nanoGroove?
A: It currently does not, but that is a great suggestion I will pass on.

Q: Does my subscription cover the costs of updates?
A: Yes, for that major release. For example, if you purchase v1.x you get all of the updates until v2.0 is released.

Q: nanoGroove stopped working. Is something wrong? What's going on? etc.
A: nanoGroove support has been keeping me updated via email with any major news and/or updates. So far I have been able to pass the information along within minutes to this thread. So unless they catch me sleeping this thread will be the best source of up to date information of what is going on.

***FAQ Section still a work in progress. Please check back for more info.

Re: The **Official** nanoGroove thread

Some carriers appear to not play nice with this app and/or the Grooveshark stream. Will update this post with more info when I have time. For now, if you are having problems with the stream where it plays a different song than what you had selected, or simply does not play anything at all, please report your carrier name and the country. Just because it is reported working or not for a specific carrier in this list does not mean you will have the same results. This is simply a compilation of reports I have received. If you are using a carrier that is listed as not working, don't be afraid to download anyway and give it a try. If you receive positive results with one of the carriers that are reported not working, please post in this thread.

Quick list:

Working:
USCC - United States
Alltel - United States
Sprint - United States
Verizon - United States

Not working:
Telus - Canada
Vodafone - Holland

Again, I am running out of time at the moment and will revise this post sometime this evening.

Used it, not worth 5 bucks, its full of bugs. Just plain old quits on you... Acts like its playing and isn't. It also has random errors over EVDO connections that their tech support admitted some of them are Grooveshark's fault and nothing they can do. So if there is nothing they can do about errors i'm having. then why would i pay $5?

the app had the potential to be awesome, unfortunately it has a long way to go to get there.

with that said there is already a nanoGroove thread, why start a new one that looks very much like spam? are you pushing their software for them?

Post #3 is going to contain a list of carriers that have been reported to work with nanogroove or not work with it. Apparantly Telus has some issues with nanogroove. MightyMike was the first I saw to report this issue. Again, more info to come on this.

Not sure how this appears to be spam to you. I was in contact with the developer of nanogroove about a few things and in the conversation asked him if he intended on putting up a thread with a FAQ on these forums. He stated he did not have time to do so and encouraged me to do this for him if I were so willing.

works well on alltel....having to build your playlist every time is a hassel...sound quality is very good...radio feature would be nice....having a "save playlist" or "select all" would be a feature I would like to see....overall worth the $5 bucks.

Mike may have issues, but im on telus as well and don't have the same as him. I also get parsing errors even on wifi. These are on Groovesharks end. So then i ask why would i pay $5 for an application that will experience errors on occasion that the application developers cannot take care of?

As for it feeling like spam, i just look at the first post and i hear "Hi Billy Mays here!, Bringing you another great product...." but that's my opinion lol

Maybe if nanoGroove was offering PPCG users a discount on the app or some coupon code then it wouldn't feel so spammy for the advertisement they are getting with this thread. Hook us up with a deal. :P

I don't have the answers to why it may not be working for some carriers, all I can do is post peoples findings of what is working and not working. In fact, I am going to revise post #3 to reflect that. If I get any more information from the developer on this, I will relay the information.

Opinion noted, I'll continue with this thread as my main objective of the thread was to give people a place to go to discuss this application with a running FAQ section. It's an app I enjoy using and as a result of this thread, the developer gets some more exposure.

When the app only costs $5 to begin with, I don't see a need for nanoGroove to offer a PPCG discount but that is just my opinion.

I agree, at least with the question of why start a new thread.? Im sure your intentions were good, but with an already established thread going, you should have maybe posted your info there, or asked the OP to update the first post with the info you shared. These will probably get merged anyway. Just my 2 cents. Thanks for the info regardless.

Thanks for the report! I too would like to see those features implemented. Unfortunately, I have no information on whether the developer has these planned for a future release. He does seem to be very open to suggestion as I have already mentioned a couple of ideas to him. Please feel free to keep posting any ideas for improvement in this thread and I will relay them to the developer. As for the radio idea, not all devices have the ability to use that feature and there are plenty of apps available which do this. nanoGroove is designed to tap into the massive library contained in Grooveshark and I don't see this particular feature being implemented but again, I will pass that on.

the "radio" feature is built into grooveshark and plays songs that are similar to to your playlists....not a deal killer for me....I mean for 5 bucks come on....this is a killer app.

Thanks, I misread the previous posters request. I took it as the ability to access the FM radio function of the device. I forgot about the radio feature of Grooveshark as I do not personally use it.

Re: The **Official** nanoGroove thread

Well it would be nice to have a clear now playing list button, Also to be able to play a song from the search screen so as to not have to, search a song>switch to the player view>push play>switch back to the search view.

I would say bury the exit button in a menu somewhere and put a more meaningful button on the left soft key. Maybe the link to the player? or a play/pause button.

It was mentioned earlier but i want to also ask for the ability to add entire playlist to playing view.

In the player view if it kept a light highlight on the song playing it would be convenient.

In grooveshark there are multiple "add" options for a song like play now, play next, add to end of list, stuff like that. It would be nice to see that functionality maybe on a long press on a song.

Also on each song could make each artist or album a hotlink to do a search for more of each field respectively. Example, I search for "most beautiful girl in the room" then on the first hit i see flight of the conchords as the artist i click it and it then searches for songs by artist flight of the conchords.

Also a button to show the most popular songs on like on grooveshark would be nice.

Only 10 of my playlists show up, I currently have 14 on grooveshark, i haven't had a chance to add or subtract any from the website (blocked at work) to see what happens in nG. The weird part is it is a seemingly random 10, they are not in order alphabetically or the order on the site.

Lastly i quite often get "song download failed! (GS_JSON_PARSE_ERROR) and i am on sprint with touch pro2

I agree 100% with everything you said and recommended. I hope that is implemented.

I use this app every single day and it works very well most times. This is the best app I have on my phone and it only cost me 5 bucks. I thought Kinoma was beast for 30 bucks but I use nG WAY more. I can't believe a few are complaining about the 5 bucks. Especially if it works for them. I would see if you tried it out and it didn't work.

I do get the song download failed every once in awhile, but i always get the song to play after a few clicks on play. And once I get one going it plays my whole list with no problems.

I think this post must fall into the category of "different users having different experiences", bc i haven't had any of those problems with nanogroove. it has worked perfectly for me. every song every time and all of my playlists.

and i am not a "nonagroove spammer". i don't doubt that you have had a negative experience- but different people in different parts of the world on different carriers are having different experiences.

Considering 1 song download = $1, $5 to listen to all the music i want all the time seams reasonable.

Groovefish is having problems playing certain songs. I hope he can figure it out and come out with a new fix. Probably 50% of the songs I try to play either get stuck on Requesting stream or get Failed to start. Off hand, search for Hallelujah Kate Voegele.. It won't play. I like the NanoGroove interface, aside from having to switch to Player to play the songs. Not sure if I'll pay the $5 yet, although that is pretty cheap!

I have much respect for Barquast (The creator of Groovefish), and having used Groovefish since it's inception.....

I liked Groovefish even with all of its flaws.
but...
1. Groovefish search results were limited relative to the same search you would do in Grooveshark.

2. Within the limited result set that Groovefish gave you, only some of the songs were actually playable, a known bug in Groovefish attributed to the way Grooveshark sends song data.

3- If I lost my EVDO and went to 1X, Groovefish would often have trouble continuing to function.

4- Groovefish had no playlist or song queue support.

- Having used Nanogroove for the past few days I am totally in love with this app.

1. You get the full result set when doing a search and I have yet to find a result that will not play.

2. Nanogroove still downloads song data with a 1x connection.

3. Playlist support.

4. Cover art.

5. Great audio quality.

6. Totally worth $5

I do agree with the feature suggestions mentioned in an earlier post as far as having the player button in place of the exit button on the search page, this would make for easier switching between the two. Highlighting the current song would also be nice. I had read in another post that a feature to resume after a phone call would also be helpful, but I have not yet run into this problem.

All in all a great program and mostly everything the groovefish community was hoping for in a program.

I bought this and have been using it the past 24 hours. Works great, though is a bit flaky about starting playback during buffering sometimes. Devs are fairly responsive also.

This work pretty good I just have to built up my playlist on GrooveShark. But it made my phone crash a few times and also my sound on my phone was gone for a bit, but after a couple of soft resets it fixed it.

Defiantly not worth 5$ :-\"

I've heard this from a few other people as well. It appears to be the temp file used for the current song you are playing. Looks like nanoGroove does not delete it when you exit.

hmm the author should probably put that as his #1 item on the fix it list. I am thinking that "feature" might anger the grooveshark staff not to mention the riaa.

edit: while on the topic of "adding" functionality to grooveshark it has to be possible to force groove shark to cache more than just the song currently playing

Just a quick question, since this isn't affiliated with Grooveshark, and they are developing their own app, what's to say that this service won't be shutdown soon?
I'd love to see this work forever, and don't mind payin the 5 bucks, but I got burned with Seeqpod going down and if Grooveshark decides to not play nice I don't want to waste money.

What are your thoughts?

Its 5 dollars. How bad can you get "burned".

What he said.

In any case, it's hard to tell what, if anything Grooveshark thinks of apps like this. For instance, Groovefish used to work well. Then Grooveshark made some changes to how they stream which knocked out Groovefish. The development of Groovefish slowed when Barquest's RL started to become more demanding so Scilor made a fix that got it working again. Given that a fix was possible, it doesn't appear that the intention of Grooveshark was to knock out anyone "piggy backing" on their stream. I would think we are safe for a while. The biggest question is, will Grooveshark be forced to close as Pandora is already having legal problems and may be forced to close. Only time will tell. Look at it this way though, if the app survives for a few months, you've got your monies worth out of it. Just would suck to become accustomed to having it everywhere you go and suddenly have to give it up.

Groovefish won't care until they have an official windows mobile program. They are more concerned with legal issues and penetrating the iphone, android and blackberry markets, all of which have official apps coming.

I think you meant Grooveshark, but in any case there is more than likely some truth to that. But for now, lets just enjoy nanoGroove for as long as we have it. There are always a lot of what ifs out there.

I agree, I just paid the $5 for nG and even thinking of paying $30 for a VIP pass but so far- the free Grooveshark account is serving me well.

I cannot believe I found out about this a few days ago when I read about nG.

$5 for a little app is nothing considering all the things we've all wasted much more money on...

Edit- I see there is a lively discussion on the other nG thread as well. I can only assume a merger is coming soon..

The app made my phone crash again today and no sounds could be heard via the speakers, again another soft reset repaired the issue. ](*,)

Can't load more than 10 playlists. And only the first 10 you created, none since that :(
