Proper Speech to Text in ALL text fields
I just got a Nexus One and played with it for a couple days. I ultimately ended up returning it because I still prefer to get the HD2 which should be out soon with T-Mobile USA, but that's another story.
My favorite feature of the new 2.1 Android OS by far is the voice input that's available everywhere you can use the keyboard to enter text here. This means you can use voice dictation for sending text messages, email, type notes, type up a Word doc or anything else for that matter. This is something I've always wanted in WinMo but never seen so far. I've used VoiceCommand and TellMe etc but they're all pretty limited and most importantly - cannot be used while you're in a text field in whatever app you're currently in. While I'm on the subject, wouldn't it also be nice if the voice input had direct hooks in to the OS so you could use your voice to add calendar appointments etc by saying something like "Appointment: Meeting with Rob, january 10th, 4pm" or something like that? I'd just like to see if there is any interest in such functionality from other users and maybe with enough interest, someone at MS will notice and make it happen. The N1 is obviously getting a lot of attention and I'd say this voice input feature is a pretty solid one. Please post here expressing your support if you are interested in this functionality natively in WinMo. Here's a video of it in action on the N1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AN0C-...eature=channel |

I want this too! My buddy just got a Droid and this is probably the most impressive feature of the phone.

Re: Proper Speech to Text in ALL text fields
This may be a neat feature; however, using in public or around others? A bit intrusive.

That is absolutely sick. I want it.

Re: Proper Speech to Text in ALL text fields
Is it really that accurate, that it can transcribe what you say, with few mistakes? Even in a noisy environment?

Re: Proper Speech to Text in ALL text fields
this would be nice, especially with a lot of the states coming up with hands free while driving, I get a lot of txt's while I'm driving and it would be nice to be able to safely respond back, or even if it would work while on the phone, like calling your voicemail, etc where you could say the menu options

I didn't get a chance to try it in a noisy environment, but the N1 has a 2nd microphone for noise cancellation - not sure if that only works when the phone is being used for voice calls. Keep the votes coming guys. |

I'm THIS close to going to back the N1 again, but I just can't give up everything I want from WinMo in exchange for this feature.. |

Android is still a fledgling OS and there is no doubt about it. Someone described the overall user experience on Android as "fragmented" and I couldn't agree more. It's coming along extremely fast though and I'm sure that soon enough I'll be switching over, it's just a matter of time. I doubt WinMo 7 is going to do anything to shake this up unfortunately. In the meantime though, WinMo is doing it for me more than the vanilla 2.1 Android. I predict that my if in a few months there comes along a Snapdragon Android handset with similar form factor like the N1 with Sense built in to it and a few versions further of Android, my upcoming HD2 will probably get traded in. This should be no later than the end of 2010. The voice input on Android 2.1 is bar none though.. Now I know why they started testing voice transcriptions on GVoice so long ago and asking our input on when it was useful and when it wasn't. Good game Google! |
Re: Proper Speech to Text in ALL text fields
I desperately need for a solid dictation app to be pushed out for winmo and preferably free... it really is a no brainer that this is missing from winmo's feature set

I'm sure with Sense, it has most of the fit and finish of TouchFLO/Manila etc. Here are some questions though: -Does it sync properly with Exchange (email, calendar, tasks) while still supporting sync with the Google cloud? -Does it sync directly with Outlook? I think this is a no. -Does it do WinMo style smart dial from the dialer where you can bring up the dialpad and just use that to start typing the letters of your contact's name and it finds them intelligently? -Is there support for text message scheduling? Or an app for this? -Is there support for backing up text messages to PC for plain text reading? Or just plain backup even? If the answer to most of these is yes, then I just might consider giving skipping over the HD2 I've been waiting for and give Android a longer shot. The only other problem is pretty basic apps without much attention to UI etc, but that should be picking up pretty rapidly with Android hopefully. |
Re: Proper Speech to Text in ALL text fields
is it 100% certain that this speech to text feature is in fact native to android 2.1 and not just on the nexus one?
