Would you still keep Google Maps app after installing Garmin Mobile XT?
Is there any reason to still keep Google Maps app after installing Garmin Mobile XT?
If I'm not mistaken, it looks like Garmin Mobile XT now incorporates google search. So, I'm wondering if there is incremental benefit to keeping Google Maps app. |
Re: Would you still keep Google Maps app after installing Garmin Mobile XT?
if you want to just quickly look at a map. Google maps loads faster than garmin xt.

I actually use latitude

Re: Would you still keep Google Maps app after installing Garmin Mobile XT?
When google does turn by turn, I won't use anything else :)
|
Re: Would you still keep Google Maps app after installing Garmin Mobile XT?
I use turn by turn as well as the tracks feature for XT. I use both, but Google simply for the satelite map.

With their own OS on the line (android), I'm not sure if Google finds it to their interest to enhance any features of Google Maps for other platforms. |

Re: Would you still keep Google Maps app after installing Garmin Mobile XT?
I use both so it would be better to keep it.

Re: Would you still keep Google Maps app after installing Garmin Mobile XT?
I kept TomTom as well as GoogleMaps/Bing. I like being able to search businesses quickly. Bing would also search near your current location for them and map it out all around you. Not to mention showing you gas prices too.

Re: Would you still keep Google Maps app after installing Garmin Mobile XT?
I use both:
-Google Maps shows address #'s when you zoom in far enough -Garmin Mobile XT is not good with address # accuracy when it's off of main roads. I was doing deliveries in one of the largest land-area towns in Connecticut and Garmin would send me to the wrong end of a road occasionally. But you gotta love how GMXT is using Google Live services that only their brand-new/high-end GPS models are using. |
Re: Would you still keep Google Maps app after installing Garmin Mobile XT?
I use both...but to be honest, the only thing I use Google Maps for is Latitude. Otherwise I use Garmin for any sort of navigation.

You can also import the Trapster database and it'll alert you of user-submitted police hideouts. The only thing I like about iGo is how smooth it is while driving, zooming, etc compared to Garmin. I hate the routes iGo chooses though and I haven't been able to make them any better. To the OP's question, I have both installed still, but I mainly use Garmin. If I just need a phone number I usually end up using Google Maps though. |
Re: Would you still keep Google Maps app after installing Garmin Mobile XT?
I'll have to try garmin XT, but I do use Latitude. I usually use 1-800-GOOG-411 for directory assistance.

Re: Would you still keep Google Maps app after installing Garmin Mobile XT?
I have the garmin xt with external gps(little grey box) is there a way to use the internal gps with the garmin maps with my touch 2

Re: Would you still keep Google Maps app after installing Garmin Mobile XT?
i say keep google maps for the simple fact that garmin is no good for directions if ur gps is not locked, u can still search and get phone numbers but when it comes to getting directions u cant do anything until u get the gps lock. Google works regardless of a gps lock or not so u can at least get directions in a text form when u are in a pitch. As for igo 8 i personally am about to uninstall it because there are alot of places around me that igo does not seem to know exists yet. I can find anything i search for in google maps and garmin xt but igo almost always comes back with a blank search list

Wirelessly posted (Touch Pro 2 (Sprint): Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; IEMobile 8.12; MSIEMobile6.0) Sprint T7380)
I run both apps. To me, they compliment each other. |
Re: Would you still keep Google Maps app after installing Garmin Mobile XT?
I kept it but I almost never use google maps. I have unlimited everything with Sprint so its easier for me to just use sprint navigation...for free.

I like Garmin a lot... I originally got it because driving cross country, there are dead spots for cell service, and I still wanted a way to find out where I was... Also better for the water... Google Maps is nice for Streetview and Lattitude... Family can track where I am... ;) |
Re: Would you still keep Google Maps app after installing Garmin Mobile XT?
yeah google maps is nice n quick if you just need to see a few roads ahead, but if you're ready to start a crazy journey id go with garmin
|
Re: Would you still keep Google Maps app after installing Garmin Mobile XT?
Garmin does not show traffic on the route you are dring. YOu have to go to garmin online to see it. it is the same as google map and much slower.
|
Re: Would you still keep Google Maps app after installing Garmin Mobile XT?
also,
some other questions. 1. Garmin mobile XT WM does not report street name on all turns, right? 2. You can not drag map around like google map or igo, right? 3. The POI is so crowded and so slow. Can I turn it off on map? |
Re: Would you still keep Google Maps app after installing Garmin Mobile XT?
Personally I have iGuidance 2009, Google Maps, Bing, and Waze.
Waze is my favorite in concept but still in beta and it shows. On the other hand it has voice turn-by-turn and real time traffic. I have iGuidance because I don't have nationwide data and have to travel outside my coverage area often enough to need it. Bing I like for finding stuff around me locally and the voice search although I don't get why it can't use the GPS as the current location as the default upon start and update that periodically. Google is really my least favorite of the bunch but I keep it around in case the others are not giving me what I want. If Google would add voice turn-by-turn and a few other features from the Android version my opinion of it could turn around real quick. |
Re: Would you still keep Google Maps app after installing Garmin Mobile XT?
I have both. I use google for very fast checks, otherwise Garmin. One of the best features of Garmin imo is the ability to flag roads or sections of roads to avoid, which is huge if you have traffic bottlenecks in your area and don't want to keep hearing "recalculating" every time you hop off the route to avoid a snag.
|
Re: Would you still keep Google Maps app after installing Garmin Mobile XT?
Just leave both on
|
Re: Would you still keep Google Maps app after installing Garmin Mobile XT?
For those that choose to operate your phones without Data Plans like me, Garmin XT is the best way to go. It can operate exactly like a standalone GPS, with no data plan required. Obviously the online stuff doesn't work, but it has POI's (Points of Interest) as a part of Maps so it will still find your local coffee shop or stuff around your current location.

Re: Would you still keep Google Maps app after installing Garmin Mobile XT?
Every program have its pro and con, so no harm having two

Re: Would you still keep Google Maps app after installing Garmin Mobile XT?

my bad, I pay the $69 everything plan, wasn't thinking.

Re: Would you still keep Google Maps app after installing Garmin Mobile XT?
I usually pull up google maps for a nearby business lookup becuase it is quicker for me. I used to use bing instead because it could lookup stuff and give real-time on route directions ("turn right in .7 miles") but the "new" bing was nerfed by microsoft and now it sucks. If i am ever trip planning or looking for a gas station gotta get out garmin though.

Re: Would you still keep Google Maps app after installing Garmin Mobile XT?
SInce some one revived this thread.
Garmin no longer supports the WM platform, to bad, I love Garmin Mobile XT, and I still use it, they told me they stopped supporting because they now have their Garmin phone, but they still support Black Berry, go figure! I am wondering if enough people contacted them requesting that they support WM if they would start again, I just can't imagine a company like Garmin abandoning all of us just to try and sell their phone, which is only available on AT&T, and T Mobile, if they knew how many people use WM, and are not with those two companies I wonder if they might rethink the whole deal. It appears that SprintNav ie Telenav have started using GoogleMaps as their database, that dissapoints me because where I live there are a LOT of mistakes with Google maps, and when they fix them, they don't really fix them, I have a business, they had the street wrong, and my business on that street, they finily kind of fixed that mistake, I am on 580 East, they had 580 east on the next street over, now they have 580 east where it is supposed to be, and 580 east on the next street over, and my business is still routed to the next street over, just can't imagine that, and there are other streets that are like that all over...that said I do use Google Maps for some things.
