Palm's App Catalog getting paid apps on September 24?

by Chris Ziegler posted Sep 18th 2009 at 1:44PM
Digital Daily's stumbled across a leaked document apparently addressed to webOS devs that shows a timeline for bringing paid apps to the webOS App Catalog, and one date in particular stands out: September 24 for go-live. The infrastructure's been in beta for a while now, giving everyone some time to get up to speed on the process and iron out the bugs, but for end users, the launch will likely happen in concert with the webOS 1.2 update we've been expecting this month and a redesigned Catalog app designed to support payments. Now, how long before we've got a bazillion-dollar I Am Rich app in there?

What is in the update that the phone should have done out of the box?

I havent read up on the update yet so forgive if this is a dumb question.

the biggest things i'm looking forward to is being able to download/view items from within the web browser and expanded copy/paste functions. like they jj said, things it should've been doing from day one if Palm had actually been paying attention to the competition

and that's kind of what it comes down to about people jumping ship. yeah against WinMo webOS is missing some things. for some people it doesnt matter such as yourself, you don't care about extensive copy/paste and/or web browser saving/downloading. I on the other hand used it almost every day when i had my touch pro and it'd be nice to have it on the pre as well

Re: Web OS1.2 should be released by next Thursday

It you spend some time over at PreCentral, you get a much different picture about what people want. And the things your mentioning don't get mentioned over there. Video recording seems to get mentioned over and over, but that's another feature that I used all of once on Touch Pro. You can download with the web browser with a tweak. Viva la homebrew!

jbearamus 09-19-2009 01:18 PM

Re: Web OS1.2 should be released by next Thursday

yes viva la homebrew
and i do spend time over @ precentral tinkering with things and its great that we can but like i said, quite a few of this should have been included in WebOS from the start

Re: Web OS1.2 should be released by next Thursday

Im excited about 1.2 because of the various speed improvements, and a lagless dialer app. It should be a pretty good update. Another thing i would like that i haven't seen mentioned, is when you do a back swipe, it takes like 2 seconds to do the action. I would like a little quicker gesture response, but that may be included in the various speed improvements.

Well it looks like when I said BY next thursday I meant Thursday.

I just read over at PreCentral.net, that the update is being delayed till next week. This is just a rumor, but who knows? Could be a disappointing Thursday for us Pre-Lovers.

The update isb't going to drop because I was ready for it and removed my tweaks. Guess I will go put them back. Lol

Re: Web OS1.2 slated to be released tomorrow.

What tweaks are we talking about?

The only tweak I have is the virtual keyboard.

CozBoogie 09-24-2009 06:12 PM

Re: Web OS1.2 slated to be released tomorrow.

Download the latest WebOS QuickInstall (there's a thread here in the Pre forum). Install it on your pc...hook your pre to your pc and select "Just Charge".

Then in WebOS QuickInstall go to Tool/Tweaks. There are about 20 or so items for "tweaking" (e.g., add more launcher pages, 4x4 launcher icons, download via web, etc.).

Coz

Re: Web OS1.2 slated to be released tomorrow.

Yah, the other tweaks are nice. i use:

launcher page add/delete
4x4 items on launcher
email in landscape
percent battery
iphone web browser spoof
sms count

its nice, check it out

Re: Web OS1.2 slated to be released tomorrow.

Do you have to remove the tweaks? Will it crash if you don't? or will it just not update?

Machinehead 09-25-2009 12:13 PM

Re: Web OS1.2 slated to be released tomorrow.

Removing all tweaks has been recommended. It's not required but it could cause issues with the update.

+1 to the above. Think of it as washing your hands after using the bathroom. It's recommended that you wash up. But while most likely something bad won't happen, you just never know:mrgreen:

Re: Web OS1.2 slated to be released tomorrow.

So anything that is currently downloaded via homebrew is a tweak, even if it is a game? Thanks in advance.

CozBoogie 09-25-2009 12:29 PM

Re: Web OS1.2 slated to be released tomorrow.

You won't have to remove your Homebrew apps. But to be safe, remove any tweaks you made via WebOS QuickInstall (e.g., vitural keyboard, email in landscape, messaging in landscape, etc.).

Make sense?

Coz

Not counting on it being anytime soon. MAYBE next week.

Re: Web OS1.2 slated to be released tomorrow.

The rumor mongers say this coming Thursday, but Palm has not announced anything officially and it'll come when it comes. I know that Palm is chomping at the bit to get the paid app store up and running but they don't want to be a disaster at launch, which is supposedly the reason for the delay.

NinjaMom 09-26-2009 11:36 AM

Re: Web OS1.2 slated to be released tomorrow.

Palm twittered this: Folks, we don't respond to rumors (about products, updates, launches, UFOs, whatever). Sorry if the rumor mill has led you astray.

Re: Web OS1.2 slated to be released tomorrow.

So we have to turn the tweaks off before we update? --- Sorry, haven't even had my Pre for a week, and have been out and about using the WebOS QuickInstall to load up some Themes, Tweaks and Apps.

NinjaMom 09-28-2009 10:49 AM

Re: Web OS1.2 slated to be released tomorrow.

Yes, remove any tweaks... Themes... They say homebrew apps are ok to leave on. Honestly... I did a webdoctor test run last week. I am going to just do that right before I upgrade.
