WM 6.1---How come we don't get all the features??

How come this new Official Sprint ROM 3.56 with the new WM 6.1 doesn't give us all the features of WM 6.1????

Yes---I get threaded text....

But I do not get their new "Home" screen----which looks like an excellent replacement for HTC Home----and is built into the OS----so not a plug in using extra memory...

My Mobile IE does not have the features of this new IE either----I don't get a "Zoom In" option at all.

See what I'm talking about here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/6-1/default.mspx

Has HTC/Sprint just dropped out some of those features???

So I have an extension to the above question...If the sprint 6.1 ROM has so much that is not offered, then does that mean all of the roms from the kitchen and from No2chem are stripped from the sprint mogul? and is that why there are none of those features for the titan on other carriers?

a lot of those features are for the "standard" edition of windows mobile which is found on regular smartphones like the Q and Samsung Ace. Us PPC users dont get those unfortunately.

Re: WM 6.1---How come we don't get all the features??

Indeed. They're actually using some careful wordsmithing in those press releases. Yes, the "home screen" is updated in windows mobile 6.1, but the catch is that only Windows Mobile Standard (non-touchscreen phones) have a "home screen." Our Windows Mobile Professional phones have a "today screen" and WM6.1 doesn't offer any enhancements for it. So ViPaDawG is correct, the Q, Ace, Blackjack II will get that nifty home screen enhancement, but our PPC phones, with WinMo Pro, will not.

Regarding the upgraded pocket IE: if you have one of the newer 6.1 builds (like no2chem's), you actually do have that "zoom in/out" feature; it's just not nearly as cool as their marketing spin makes it out to be. Next time you open up a website in pocket IE, tap the menu button (the right softkey). You should see an option to "zoom out." Try it out and you'll see that it's basically a useless feature.

A LAZY DUDE is 100% correct with everything he wrote. Also every 6.1 update has that zoom option built into the mobile IE browser. You have to let the page fully load before that zoom option will work.

Re: WM 6.1---How come we don't get all the features??

Thanks----good explanations from all....

And I played around with Windows Mobile IE and found the features listed in the menus.....just a little harder to get to than the marketing pitch....

You guys seem very knowledgeable----quick questions......

Many of the web sites I visit say that I don't have JAVA---yet IE mobile has a stripped down version enabled----and the Sprint Mogul even has a JAVA application.

What is that JAVA application good for----or even used for???

And----what is your impression of Opera with full Java support???

Re: WM 6.1---How come we don't get all the features??

You're confusing Java with Javascript. Javascript is some fancy coding in webpages that instructs your browser on your phone to perform special functions, like opening a popup window for example. Just about all Windows Mobile browsers have at least some basic support of Javascript.

You can think of Java, on the other hand, as sort of a mini operating system (called a virtual machine) running on top of the OS you're running; the idea is similar to VMware or Virtual PC on your computer, so whether you have a Windows Mobile, Palm, Symbian phone, you can get use the appropriate Java VM (Virtual Machine) and be able to run the same Java applet on any type of device. (For example, you can run the same Opera Mini applet on a Windows Mobile, Palm, or Symbian phone's Java VM.)

Unfortunately, there are several different types of Java available, so it can be confusing to understand which is which. The type of Java VM that you have on your Mogul is Java Micro Edition, which is a specialized version of Java that is able to run smaller, less complex Java programs (commonly called applets).

Now this Java VM isn't like the Java SE (the full blown Java VM) that runs on your computer; it doesn't integrate into your browser on your smartphone, so websites that have Java applets embedded in them won't work, and it can't run full sized Java SE programs.

The most common Java applet people use is probably the Opera Mini web browser, followed by Google Maps (for phones that don't have a native Google Maps program available, such as S40).

I'm more concerned with carriers like Sprint not deleting apps from 6.1 like it's built in Task Manager and the new 6.1 version of RDP. I mean, who knows what else they have cut out of the OS.

Glad I am not the only one. I was looking forward to using the new 6.1 RDP. It wasn't there though! Grr.
