Re: GPS on alltel 6800 - easy way

I'm a complete newb when it comes to this phone (just got it last week) but I love the fact that I can have GPS on it. I have a few questions though.

Does the GPS show Lat/Long coordinates on the screen?

What is a soft reset vs a hard reset?

Is the soft reset, pushing the button on the bottom of my phone with my stylus? and a hard reset, holding down the power button? Sorry for such rookie type questions.

Thanks for your help

Depends on what program you are running. If it is GPSView then yes on showing the coordinates.
You are right about the soft reset vs the hard reset but the hard reset is holding the red and green button and then pushing the bottom reset button.

If you're running Google Maps with your new ROM, you can also use the GPS feature to lock onto sattellites.

Re: GPS on alltel 6800 - easy way

When that rom was first released I was so excited! Finally got GPS! I added the .dll files that would turn on GPS and was amazed to see it work... The problem was it would take up to 10 minutes to get a lock. When I want GPS, I want it now. I know I could go out and spend $200 and have my own unit, but aren't we trying to consolidate everything down to one? That's why I wanted the 6800. I could have a phone and GPS all in one.

Once I got the balls, I decided to flash a custom rom... What I noticed with the GPS from that point on, was that I was locking in about 30 sec. to a minute! The scary part is unlocking boot loader. Once you accomplish that you never have to mess with it again and from there on flash away. Get board with WM and want an iphone? It's yours! Get board with that and want to make your 6800 a touch, done... Another thing, most of the Roms out there have GPS enabled, come with WM6.1 and have Threaded SMS! Cody SMS Threader is OK... It served it's purpose, but I do enjoy the WM SMS threader!

Really though if you have reservations about flashing a custom rom head over to http://ppckitchen.org and check out the faq's. Flashing Olipro isn't all that difficult, follow the instructions and you'll have everything you ever wanted on your phone, and best of all it's set up the way you want to. If you get stuck or have a question, they also have a chat room. Check it out, most everyone there will help you through the process. If you can't find anyone in there check the chat room at ppcgeeks.com and someone there can help.

Hi! will this work on the TOUCH by HTC? and if so, will it work like a tom tom or a garmin gps?

jpc0480 08-04-2008 12:24 PM

Re: GPS on alltel 6800 - easy way

I'm not sure if the Touch has GPS... If it does there are a couple of free progs to use, Google Maps, Live Search, etc... You can add TomTom and/or Garmin though.

Right but does it show Lat/Long coordinates on the map using google?

Seeing the coordinates and not just the dot that shows me where I am is what I'm looking for.

Thanks

Re: GPS on alltel 6800 - easy way

I just wanted to report that I just got my HTC 6800 over the last week. After seeing this posting, adding GPS was something that I definitely wanted to do to my phone.

After some checking, I found out that my phone already had the ROM version and radio version installed in the first part of this message. Eagerly, I tried just installing Google maps, but GPS didn't work. Then I installed the patches, soft reset my phone, and all is good!!!

If you have a fairly recent phone, it appears that you might have the latest ROM and radio version. If that's the case, then you don't need to go thru the step of flashing the ROM, or at least I didn't.

Immediately after the patch installs, it took my phone about 5 minutes to find 5 satellites. Since then, it doesn't have any problem finding satellites very quickly. 5 is the most that I've seen so far, so I think that I'll put my phone in the window and see if I can lock onto more, even though it works great at the moment.

PS: let me say two things:

1) I'm totally new to the whole internet/gps/windows mobile/ phone thing. Yeah, I have had cell phones, but this is something totally different. :)

2) This site is TOTALLY AWESOME! This is my first post, and I hope to find out a TON of information here. The information in this one post has been almost invaluable!!! Now I can sell my hand held GPS. :)

Re: GPS on alltel 6800 - easy way

jpc0480,

thanks for giving us the extra info. but the point of this particular thread was to get gps to work on an official rom without unlocking the phone. there are pros and cons to custom roms. I have used custom roms since day 1 on my 6700 and 6800. but i keep finding there to be glitches and little annoying things. i dont have time to constantly reflash every time a problem is found. on the other hand many of the great chefs out there KNOW what we want better then the phone companies do. and eliminate the garbage in the rom and give us bonus appz. but lets keep this on topic here. many people have these as corporate phones and custom rom is not an option. i find the official rom to be the most stable i have ever run. but like i said, this discussion is for a different post and lets stay on topic here. i do appreciate the fact that u recognized many people here are first time posters and you are trying to help them out. :)

If you people want to say thanks for this then there is a button under my name that says "Thanks" feel free to click that. not that i really care though. itll just save you some typing ;)

shadow-tech

Just went through the process. Took me about 6 minutes total from install to acquisition of satelites. I already had the new Rom and had Google Maps installed.

Works like a charm. I was in Nigeria for 2 minutes then I was back in the USA :headbang:

This will be an awesome add on thanks for your insight. =D>

chevyforlife 08-25-2008 07:05 PM

Re: GPS on alltel 6800 - easy way

just install the four and then youll need to soft reset the phone(little hole next to usb) and then when you reset you will have two new messages in your inbox saying that system info has been changed. then make sure that you set up the gps through the settings menu. it should be ready to go.

first off welcome to the madness, and second if you update your rom with the official update from sprint(newest) or a custom rom you will have gps. this is for alltel cause were on the leading edge of being behind in updates. and i would not advise flashing a custom rom if you dont know wat ur doing.

Take it from a newb who just did this.

It WILL work if you follow shadow-techs step by step instructions.

I did not need to download any new ROM cause mine was sufficient.
So I downloaded the Enable GPS Patch, installed all four files. The two that you say didn't download, actually did. I thought the same thing but they are so fast and tiny that all you see is the flicker of the screen if you can even catch that.

Then go to Start/Settings/System (tab)/External GPS

Programs tab should be set at COM4
Hardware tab should be set at (None) and 4800
Access tab should be set at (check the box)

Soft reset (use stylus to push little button in hole right next to the memory slot)
Now I'm using Google Maps Mobile and if your using the same here are the setting for it.

Open program go to menu click on "Use GPS"

The initial satelite lock on took me approximately 5 minutes. Make sure your outside because if indoors satelites have a harder time finding you.

Seeking GPS satellites will appear on upper right hand of screen.

This is the exact process I followed and it works like a charm.
Good luck

Re: GPS on alltel 6800 - easy way

word up. there is a rumor that within 2-3 weeks there will be an official alltel update that has GPS implemented. It is Windows Moblie 6.1 but has a few extra things. cant remember the other thing it has. i think they will have one for the 6800 and the Vogue. so yeah, in a few weeks this thread should die.
