This is to make it so the Internal GPS works on an Alltel ppc-6800, without using hacked roms. unlock tools or anything along those lines. its an official ROM that has a small patch.

Make sure you have updated your ROM with the HTC/Alltel ROM from the website and the patch.

ROM: http://216.139.227.226/alltel/RUU_TI..._PPST_Ship.exe
50MB

patch:
http://johniii.tripod.com/Enable_GPS_Alltel_ppc6800.zip <--must copy and paste into browser
80KB

1. copy the contents of the 'Enable_GPS_Alltel_ppc6800.zip' to your phone.
2. Install each of 4 files one at a time to the main memory (do not install on storage card).
3. start with file 1 then 2 then 3 then 4 (some of the install files will only make the screen 'flick' this is good. move on to the next one)
4. after they are all done soft reset the phone.

check that ur gps setting:
start/settings/system/external gps
Program Tab: Com 4
Hardware Tab: gps hardare port= none, baudrate = 4800 baud
Access Tab: check 'manage gps automatically'

use google maps. (gps option = let windows manage my gps)

------------------------------------------

As with any ROM upgrade, make sure you *228 and "upgrade your phones roaming capabilites"

*UPDATE*
See this thread to drastically improve the performance of the Internal GPS:

Thanks so much for the great info... unfortunately I cannot get Google Maps to see my GPS location. I have Alltel PPC 6800 and have done every step to the tee. My location is set to on and my GPS settings are matching the ones you instructed.

I have Google maps looking for SATs and get nothing and when I click on My Location it says "Your device not configured for locations".

Any ideas?

dont click my location. click use gps. once u have a gps connection, u can use the my location setting to center the map on ur location (if u scroll away from it)

Re: GPS on alltel 6800 - easy way

u wont need to back up ur contacts to get the gps to work.

a soft reset is just pressing the real little button on the bottom of the phone.

all it does is reboot your phone.

Re: GPS on alltel 6800 - easy way

Posting #1 is Good info. shodow-tech but I still need help with this on my Alltel PPC 6900 Touch that does not have it's internal GPS enabled yet.

I have stock OEM Alltel Rom and radio mentioned in the trouble-shooting so I did not perform any ROM update as the 6800 had and saved the 4 files from the zip into my main memory and installed them in sequence per the instructions into Main Memory and confirmed all my settings per the trouble-shooting also and still no GPS enabled.

The only thing I did not find a way to perform was the -Location Setting must be ON...I did get to the Phone\menu\options...\Services\Location Setting on my Alltel Touch and had a listing for the "Location Settings" but could get to a place where I could turn it ON or Off; it was just listed. And whe i highlighted the Location Settings and clicked "Get Settings" it does not respond with anything to allow this On/Off setting.

What's the deal with that??? Any idea on what that means when i cannot get the choice for these Location Settings or is it set to ON since it's listed?

Thanks in advance,
bimerguy

Re: GPS on alltel 6800 - easy way

I have the same phone, radio and rom as you do and all you have to do is the 4 files to get your GPS unlocked and then follow Shadow-Tech's instructions and it will work. I hear there is a new ROM coming out this week. I was unable to find the rom download from HTC's web site but it was up there a couple months ago and I flashed it then but now it has been taken off for some reason.

you select location setting then click 'get settings...'

if it does nothing when u click 'get settings...' then i have no idea. ill look into that. i belive there is registry entry for all those items listed. let me see if there is a flag that will disable you from changing that. check back in a bit. if there is you will ne a registry editor. task manager 3.1 will work.

Re: GPS on alltel 6800 - easy way

bimerguy,

open up a registry editor and go to the key

HKLM\SOFTWARE\OEM\PhoneSetting\Location Setting

there should be 12 entries
(D means Dword, S means String)
these are the important ones.

D - ItemCount (2)
S - ItemName1 (ON)
S - ItemName2 (OFF)
D - ItemValue1 (0)
D - ItemValue2 (3)
S - ServiceName (Location Setting)
S - ServiceTitle (Phone: Location Setting)

make sure u put these in the soft reset if they arent there.

Re: GPS on alltel 6800 - easy way

Alrighty,

1. Went through. Fresh Flash.

2. Installed the .cab file that you linked to.

3. Enabled Location and GPS settings.

4. Installed Google Maps

5. Loaded up Google maps, clicked "Use GPS"

No worky.

Sits there for about 30 seconds saying "Initializing GPS..." before coming back and saying I don't have a GPS Receiver installed.

I can try to re-flash again, but not sure if it's going to help much. Will try again tonight.

Stevevo 09-24-2008 09:25 PM

Re: GPS on alltel 6800 - easy way

I think you did everything ok on the flash but you need to go in and do the unlock GPS with the 4 small cab files. When you get that working then you can go in and do the fast lock that Shadow Tech has written the instructions on. GOod Luck

ok i think u chagning the wrong setting.

there are 3 tabs in the 'External GPS' settings menu.
they are 'Programs', 'Hardware', 'Access'

under 'Programs' tab:
GPS program port: COM4

under 'Hardware' tab:
GPS hardware port: (None)
Baudrate: 4800

under 'Access' tab:
Manage GPS automatically: Enabled (Check mark is there)

in google maps,

goto menu\options\GPS Setting...

Managed By Windows: enabled (mark is there)

did u see the troubeshooting section? did you go through each step to ensure you are set up correctly?

go back to post #1 and read the troubleshooting section.

Re: GPS on alltel 6800 - easy way

yep, all the settings are correct, did many soft resets and even *228, i even went as far as to walk outside last night and literally hold my phone up in the air because it was wide open and clear outside and i still got nothing.

on a second note; i did notice that my external gps is under system instead of connections like it was sated in the troubleshooter in 1st post, not sure but i think i remember seeing with new rom update it said it wuz supposed to move exteral gps into the connections tab, but mine is still in settings/system tab..... dont know if that has anything to do with my problem

if u had the zip file with the 4 cabs then it will be in system, the cab i made moves it to connections. this doesnt make a difference where it is.

i have updated the 1st post. u will need to check it again. it has all the trouble shooting steps. if it doesnt work then u are doing something wrong or have done something wrong. all u need to do is install a cab and soft reset. i dont know what to say other then read the troubleshooting section. read it again very carefully and dont skip over it. if u resolve ur issue please share what u did. perhaps u have a problem that i am unaware of. good luck
