Linux on our 6800's? (Mogul, Titan, XV6800, etc...)

Correct me if I'm wrong (and I certainly could be), but I caught word from a friend that somone's working on a Linux distro that can be flashed onto our phones.

Sounded like a bunch of crap to me, so I searched and didn't find anything.

Anyone else hear this?

It would be a good idea though, wouldn't it? Considering, in general, Linux has never been as big a memory hog as Windows, and it's more stable (if you know what you're doing with it).

Re: Linux on our 6800's? (Mogul, Titan, XV6800, etc...)

there are some of us working on it. As far as I know, I've gotten the farthest, it's close, probaly need a little reworking of the kernel. here are some links (and if someone has gotten further than me on this particular phone, PLEASE let me know!

also, so far it's only working as a boot through haret, dzo got it working on the vogue, but there is no phone or input as of yet. So, as far as a working distro, no, not yet. Not to my knowledge. But more of a sneak peek at android.

Well that's cool! I am definitely keeping an eye out for this! If you guys can get the radio working and phone features to work properly, it's GOODBYE WINDOWS FOR ME!!! I'd love to try this out if you get a beta together, just let me know if you remember!

Re: Linux on our 6800's? (Mogul, Titan, XV6800, etc...)

It will take a LOT of work to get a complete backhaul removing CE from the equation (which is mandatory for it to work on the Mogul with the limited RAM, not so much on the Vogue) since there is literally no documentation readily available on how the components in the phone interface with each other, much less how to get the CDMA radio working with all functions. There is a lot to consider there - the 1X/EVDO handoff, roaming, 911... all these things have to be set up in the phone for it to work properly.

Either way though, I'd be more than a little bit excited to have linux on my Mogul. The closest I've come to that joy is SimpleOS and that's a rather slow and buggy skin that sucks up lots of RAM but looks like Linux lol.

I actually don't think it will be as hard as we're thinking to interface with the radio. From my understanding, the radio is running the L4 linux microkernel. I've read it at several places, but i guess if someone wants to take the official radio and take it apart......hint hint

Re: Linux on our 6800's? (Mogul, Titan, XV6800, etc...)

Well I can tell you that HaRET successfully loaded the Android kernel on my Titan today.

I need to read up on initrd and figure out how to pull things out of the Android's image selection and create an initrd that may boot on the Titan. The base ramdisk.img in the Android SDK + HaRET and the zImage that was built by dzo on xda gets me as far as seeing Tux (kernel) plus the ANDROID_ flashing screen but obviously it has nothing else to initialize.

I think that getting Android running is our best bet to getting out of WM land.

Re: Linux on our 6800's? (Mogul, Titan, XV6800, etc...)

Okay so an update.

I've broken down initrd-android and removed a whole bunch of **** for testing purposes. It boots to the A N D R O I D _ screen like the base image does now.

This leads me to believe that it has been a memory issue of trying to load the initrd into RAM. While the archive Gzipped is only 22MB, extracted it is over 40. Way too much for our devices to handle.

What I'm working on now is building a new kernel that does not have ANY input devices selected to see if it is the Vogue's input information that is crashing the boot sequence. If it is, I may be able to at least get Android booting but obviously we won't be able to do anything with it. Baby steps...
