My Sprint ROAMING EVDO Story~~

well.. i think i got my situation under control.. this is my story.. hopefully it helps some of you!

SO... once upon a time, on my old ROM, not sure which version I figured out how to change mode of operation to EVDO ONLY. this was awesome to me, as I DO NOT live in a EVDO SPRINT area... i figured I would try bumping it into EVDO ONLY and sure enough, i got an evdo signal. This was awesome for surfing net but of course, can't make phone calls. I would use this though all the time.

well, a few phones later--a900, moto q, treo700wx, mogul, touch, back to mogul, i tried to EVDO ONLY again and nope, couldn't get a signal. funny thing was when i would run field trial i was picking up a HDR signal..

well... i tried all of the most recent Sprint PRLs, had Sprint do a HLR Reload on my device... had them give me their newest/current PRL, but still.. couldn't force EVDO ONLY..

well today i downloaded Alltel's PRL 300029 from here http://www.corolada.com/prl/ and used it on my device and WOW, I GET SO GOOD OF RECEPTION BOTH 1XRT and EVDO, but I'm in roaming of course!

so trouble is now.. if i want EVDO, i just have to do a quick PRL switch on my device... my idea of a perfect program now would be to somehow make this quick PRL switch effortless and quick.. or combine the files some how..

TO UPDATE PRL (if you are on Sprint--if you don't know how):
Download and move the PRL you would like to use to your device (doesn't matter where on the device you put it);
If you know your MSL, skip to next step, otherwise get your MSL# by doing this:

-Download the GETSPC.zip attached to this post;
-Move the folder onto your device (again, I don't think location matters);
-Run the GetSPC application and enter your ESN--can be found here (settings-system-device information) (make sure you use caps)
-the output will be your MSL#

After you know your MSL#,
Run the EPST Config (i'm not sure the ## code, might be 778 if i remember) (find your EPST in your WINDOWS directory on your MOGUL--it is called EPSTConfig);
Click EDIT, type in your MSL#; left softkey VIEW INFO, select PRL.
Select the Update PRL File row, hit Menu, Edit.
The PRL file you wish to use should show up when you hit Browse. Hit OK.
Hit right softkey Menu, OK-- Yes to "Update these Items"

Your phone should ask to reset itself and when rebooted should be running the PRL you just updated.

If you have Sprint for service but updated to the Altel PRL, are you also able to call while roaming?
How do you install the PRL?

I have Sprint for service, and when I was using Alltel's PRL, I could make and receive calls fine (roaming of course)

i'll update my first post how to install PRL.. give me a couple of min plz

I tried out a few PRL's out of curiosity to see if I could EVDO roam.

well i took ur advice and it worked....



and im in a 1x sprint area.... guess ill just have to swap out when i wanna do some internet by phone on a laptop... lol i wonder will this fall under my data plan package or if ill get hit wit a roaming charge

yeah i have free unlimited roaming with my SERO plan, but I'm sure that if i would stay on roaming, sprint would cancel me.. or so i think they work like that...

but i love that i finally came across this fix (dsl reports mspeed test was giving me 400+kb/s up to 800+kb/s..i should use a better speed test)

anyways here is a story from trying to figure everything out:
i called "advanced" tech support today and spoke with a lady named "Shelly"...
I was calling to request a HLR RELOAD...i first asked her if she knew what this was and she said she didn't. so I'm like ok, i will call back unless you can ask a co-worker or manager how to do this for me. she insisted she could figure out my problem and help me either way and wouldn't ask anyone around her (not sure if there was people around her or not)

so i told her i couldn't get evdo roaming to work... all i had was 1x for data connections.. she replies "so your internet is not working when you are roaming?" i said no, my high speed connection to the EVDO networks aren't working, i only can roam on the slower 1x networks... she tells me that EVDO isn't something i can connect to, it is a "speed"... i was like.. ok, evdo and 1x are different type of signals...my evdo roaming signal isn't working.. she preceded to tell me she is an advanced technician and she knows what she is talking about.. going back and forth arguing about how i just need a hlr reload and how evdo is a speed she finally said give me 2 min while i put you on hold.. so i hung up and called advanced tech support right back and the guy that i got to knew SOOO much about sprint/data/evdo/roaming/prls/hlr.. he knew everything and realized what i was doing.. i told him i was going to try and use ALLTEL's PRL on my phone and he laughed and then said if he wasn't a Sprint employee, he would recommend trying that.. lol.. oh well.. sorry for long post

i have a question on this. i jsut had free roaming added to my plan due to the fact im moving to a non sprint coverage area. would this work for me installing a diff prl file from say like verizon or alltel and roam of their towers... there are no future sprint towers going up where im moving either and i dont want to cancel and lose my sick plan and move to a more *gasp* expensive service where i have to babysit my bill.

WOW, this is getting really weird..I put Sprint's PRL Back on my phone, and now i'm geting good EVDO signal and it doesn't say roaming.. i am not in a sprint evdo area either... so weird...

how are you guys doing speedtest.com? through internet sharing? i just tried it doing it through internet sharing and only got..


NVM, i think i was still on Alltel's PRL... even though i tried switching it.. for some reason my PRL didn't update..oh well i got excited

yeah i did it thru internet sharing, since i couldnt get speedtest to work right off the phone. also, i did a speed test on orb, and it was around 600kbps... gotta love alltel evdo....

yeah... alltel evdo isn't that fast here but its fast enough for surfing the web for sure
