ROM versus RAM, OEM versus .cab
I have been cooking since my vx6700. Lots of fun and lots of kitchens. These devices are awesome with the work that you all do. I wish the carriers would hire you all !!
With my VX6800, I have done all of the ROM. Still having fun. I have a couple of questions, With all the ROM Choices and I am sure Kitchens soon. 1. What are the advantages of cooking a ROM with all the extra OEMs? 2. Is ROM faster than RAM? 3. Is OEM faster than .cab? 4. Programs that are being updated alot, such as Microsoft Live and S2U2, would I be better loading them into RAM and keeping the tested in ROM. What happens when Microsoft updates Live and I have it in ROM? 5. Is loading the ROM to Capacity with all of the OEMs, say down to less than 10% available memory. Does that slow the phone down? 5. If I just go with a clean ROM, am I just wasting memory in the ROM and using up the RAM? I do understand that having the ROM saves time on a hard reset. But the only time I do that is for something new and fun from you all :) Bottomline, would you all recommend: 1. Clean ROM, and add the .cabs 2. Find a ROM that I like 3. Cook with a kitchen, when readily available? Sorry for being long. In advance, I really appreciate any responses. This is something bugging me for a while. An explanation will be much appreciated |
Convenience! That is the best reason for oem’s. Especially with this new crop of 6.1 firmware, I find myself flashing my ROM multiple times a day. I don’t want to keep installing my cab’s every time. I have combined some of my most useful cab’s all into one cab incase I want to try a prebaked Rom and want to add my apps in one step. With that said, I stopped backing some programs like s2u2 into my ROMs just for the simple fact that there is a new version every other day. Some stuff like games and what not never or rarely update. Those are prime oem candidates. Plus, baking your own is just fun and cool! Yes, I am a geek! These are just my reasons and thoughts.

@ polter.....
I have several .cabs that I put back on my device after every flash as well. How does one go about creating a single .cab from multiples? Is there a "kitchen" of sorts or a program that allows you to create the cabs? Thanks! :) |
It is not just Fun to keep baking ROM, it becomes almost obsessive.
My wife now thinks, I am the biggest Geek of all times. But I least I know there others, like me, out there ! |

Yeah, it is a bit obsessive! My wife refers to my phone as my mistress. We'll have to get that straitened out by a therapist down the road i'm sure. Anyway, WinCE Cab Manager is a great program for cab management. You basically export the files and reg setting out of your cabs, and then import them all into to on big one. You can also include your different program registrations into you cab reg setting, so that you don't have to plug registration numbers in each time you install your progs. Have fun.

Just to confirm, there is not performance gain or loss, using cabs or oems?
Also if the ROM is mostly filled up, is there a performace loss? The RAM is so big |
