Question on PagePlus Data...

Hey there everyone,

It may seem strange to see 2 Bunny in the Android and Samsung section. A series of very unfortunate events has forced me to pick up a Samsung Epic here at the last second (you can learn more about that here) and I've decided to activate it on PagePlus instead of Sprint or Boost (which is what I had been planning to do with the Diamond anyway).

I found this really nice instruction guide on Google docs that basically walks you through step by step with everything you need to do in QPST and on the handheld to get everything going great. I've been up and running now for about a week and I have to say that everything is working about perfectly now except for one thing: EvDo data.

I tried lots of tweaks and settings in QPST, but nothing seems to be getting EvDo to work. I dialed ##DEBUG# and right now have it set up to force 1xRTT, and that works fine, but obviously only at 1x speeds. If I go back and switch to "hybrid" mode again, it just doesn't connect, and because Android is annoying and won't tell you what the heck it's doing, I don't know exactly where it's getting hung up at in the whole process. Back on Windows Mobile, I could just tap the taskbar and it would tell me if it was trying to connect, and if it failed, it would let me know.

Basically, I fell kind of "left out" by the device since it isn't telling me where it's getting "lost" at in the whole EvDo thing. Does anyone know why it isn't connecting, or of any way to find out what the device is at least trying to do?

Thanks.

I did the same thing, except for PagePlus. I want to figure out why I can't use my EvDo.

I'm on a medicore 100MB per month plan - if you know where I can do better for under $40 per month, please enlighten me.

I would suggest the new T-Mobile plan (if T-Mobile is good in your area)

You get for $30 a month:

100 minutes
5gb data with 4G, (throttling after 5gb)
unlimited texts

as for your issue...hm..we have something called logcat which helps debug errors but not sure if it includes exactly what you need :/

Yea I'm with @gTen u should've went with one of those Tmo plans. U will also get HSPA and HSPA+ connectivity which is far faster than EvDO especially sprint's implementation.

It's a good idea, but there is a formidable problem with that: My Epic is incompatible with the inferior GSM networks. Are there any deals like that on the stronger CDMA networks?

And that's totally exciting, but I'd still like to stick with the more formidable modern CDMA networks available to us today.

Re: Question on PagePlus Data...

If CDMA was more formidable and less inferior I wouldn't be in the process of switching to Tmo due to shit data speeds for 9 months. Also Sprint CDMA phones seem to have more trouble regaining a lost 3G signal while transmitting data. (this is very annoying for me when I'm streaming a song during my commute and the train passes through a non 3G area. I have to pause or even restart whatever song I was listening to just to regain 3G.

Back on Boost (Sprint CDMA only sans roaming), if I remember my Speed test results, I think I was hitting 480-720KBs Per second, which translates into a real life download speed equivalent of 50+ regular kilobytes per second - and it was plenty workable enough for me.

The problem is the lousy signal range of GSM devices and even Sprint's less than perfect CDMA network. I'd have been good if I could do at least some roaming on Verizon. Now the only place I don't have coverage is in the center of a building where the 850Mhz don't quite penetrate like the 1.9Ghz did.

My music library is local as opposed to streamed, so I've never had the problem that you were asking about, even in areas with no signal. And if memory serves me correctly, while listening to streaming radio, during those pesky tower transitions, it actually picked up and finished buffering where I left off, which I thought was simply amazing.

Why did you leave Boost? $50 unlimited everything, and it goes down $5 every 6 months. So you'd be paying $35/month after 18 months.

umm....have no clue what you are talking about...HSPA+ is the progression of WCDMA. Oh and LTE is a progression of GSM and HSPA.

If you mean lower spectrum, t-mobile does roam in the 850mhz and uses 1.9ghz themselves. 3g goes over 1700 MHz/2100 MHz.

And yeah Epic won't work on GSM..:/

There is the new republic wireless which costs 19$..there is also virgin mobile's 25$ plan...

At the time, I couldn't afford that. Their PayAsYouGo was going great until they started charging even more for data, and on top of that they wanted to double the already ridiculous rates, so I said "screw that". I might've paid the fifty if there was some roaming on Verizon, but even Sprint's CDMA network fails in certain areas.

That's quite interesting actually. I somehow doubt though that my cable internet is slower than cellular though.

Right, that's GSM. The Samsung Epic is a CDMA device.

Their "unlimited" doesn't include that much data, doesn't work with normal phones, and only works on the Sprint network, which runs me back into my original problem.

Virgin Mobile's $25 looks great, but I don't know how to do ESN cloning - that and everyone is so brainwashed into thinking it's "illegal" that you can't even ask about it on any of the larger online forums. I'd love to learn how, but nobody is willing to help even though nobody gives a crap.

I was hoping for a CDMA BYOD carrier that has either the Verizon network or Sprint with data roaming (1xRTT roaming is okay). I'm hoping for bare minimum 300-500MB+ (hoping for 1-2GB, or ideally, unlimited) and a couple hundred text messages and around 100 minutes of voice, all for well under $40 a month depending on what all it has in it.

Let me know what you figure out, Thanks.

There's straightalk that's CDMA they have $45 for everything but I'm not sure if u could use the epic on it. There's virgin mobile, cricket/metroPCS depending on where u live, these networks use the less crowded 1700mhz AWS band.

Straight talk was one of those "almost would consider", except BYOD is gonna be tough, since I'd need a Straight Talk ESN and also learn how to clone which nobody will tell you how to do since everyone is brainwashed into thinking that it is somehow illegal.

Same goes for Virgin Mobile.

MetroPCS would've been a halfway decent alternative, but their nearest store with MetroFlash is a few hundred miles away, plus even if I did activate there, I'd be roaming where I live. I guess it's some local thing where you're only not roaming within a certain radius of where you activated.

I'm still lookin' - keep shooting more to me.

I've seen many sero plans sold on ebay, but not that many these days. I paid $75 for mine a year ago, and it's paid for itself tenfold. Your not going to beat $50/month even on prepaid with the roaming Sprint gives you.
You may be able to sign up for a new eprp plan, get the sero plan transferred into your name, then cancel the eprp plan within 30 days.

Also it's a best offer auction, they may take $100

I thought I already said so, but maybe I wasn't very clear, so I'll just say it again: The Samsung Epic is incompatible with the inferior GSM network.

As expensive as it is, it might be a good move, but I'm still not entirely sure I want to go that route. Is that EPRP plan you were talking about their current Sprint.com/Sero plan? Does their current $39.99 plan include any data?

Calm down, we're not even really talking about the inferiority of GSM.

Just to recap for everyone else, we're mostly talking about ways to get EvDo data working on PagePlus and also reasonable plans such as sprint sero as well as ways to get Sprint Sero plans (the old ones).

Thanks for everyone's help so far. I look forward to seeing lots of good suggestions from ya'all.

Any new ideas on this?

Oh by the way, I just remembered - to make things even more complicated, the handheld has a crapped out ESN for Sprint. If push came to shove and there was some really good Sprint or Sprint MVNO deal (with Verizon Wireless roaming), I could clone the ESN, but since everyone's brainwashed into thinking that it's somehow "illegal", I don't know if I'll be able to find the information. Right now, we just need to find a carrier and plan. Keep your eyes open on your local auction sites and Craiglist cities for SEROs (I know I'll be keeping my eyes open for 'em), as those would be ideal: The data I need, with a low price and a (some) roaming (it doesn't really matter since I'm in the Sprint area probably 90-95% of my wireless year.

Thanks.

umm..yes and no...

old sero = sero = 30$
new sero = EDRP = 60$
sero premium = 40$

sero premium is when you had an old sero plan and you upgraded it for $10 to allow you to use all none 4g devices. 4g devices are $10 extra a month.
