My phone is pure stock epic 4g no rooting and it overheats when charging via wall outlet or usb. It does not matter what charger brick samsung lg and usb cable used samsung htc blackberry or even regular standard wall charger.

hmm..weird..usually heat is caused when your phone is using up a a lot of energy and charging at the same time thus causing battery to heat up :/..I guess you can try to charge it on a metal surface..

To stop your phone from overheating just put your phone on icecream sandwich I preferred the tri-band icecream sandwich chocolate, vanilla and strawberry. Also putting icecream sandwich on your phone will help too but might cause other problems not covered under your warranty.
