Welcome to the wrong side of the tracks!

Re: Bought My Epic... Here I come people!
Welcome to the dark side :)
We have information for most stuff around but if you need anything feel free to ask and me and others will be glad to assist you the best we can. As for Android, its not as hard as it looks..just gotta understand a few basics and you'll now it like the back of your hand..if you have any linux experience it makes it even easier to adopt to..If not its still fairly simple... |
Re: Bought My Epic... Here I come people!
I love my Epic, but just my own opinion, it doesn't need any custom rom, it works great without it! :)
|
Re: Bought My Epic... Here I come people!
Yeah im sure it does but ive been reading up and I really want to get rid of the carrier Iq out of my phone.
Im going to be asking alot of questions so thanks that you guys are willing to help. Im sure later though your going to regret you offered. lmao j/k |
Not to threadcr*p, but if you bought it w/2yr, you should have it pricematched to Best Buy which does cover upgrade (not mentioned on flyer) for $0+free bonus CD. I took the plunge myself from my trusty TP2, which I still love the keyboard/tilting screen. If your TP2 is still usable, you should look into AndroBoosting it, when FRX07 comes out it'll be a very stable and usable backup device that's on Sprint's network.

Welcome O.P. I also came from a TP2 and am loving this Epic more and more.
As for custom Roms, for me, the easiest way has been to use Odin to flash an all-in-one Rom like this one. forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1061912 Especially with the versions changing so often. That rom is mostly stock, no CIQ, already rooted! If you want to try another Rom,ec05, you can then just flash it as a .zip using recovery. Whatever you decide, just enjoy! |
Re: Bought My Epic... Here I come people!
Just got the phone in the mail.
Im headed to the sprint store to pick up a usb cable for it. When I come back Im rooting this SOB!! Hopefully flash a custom rom tonight! Im going to try that link you mentioned darren. Thanks |
Re: Bought My Epic... Here I come people!
well it looks like I have to wait to buy the usb cable from ebay. Radioshack sprint and bestbuy all want upwards of 20+ dollars for a usb cable which i find is extremely overpriced
Guys quick questions on flashing. Do certain unlockers work with certain roms. Some say flash with odin others say with eco5. I tried going over to the evo forum and they have even different unlockers with different names.. What is EC05 EXT4, EE03, ODIN (is that an abrevation for something) clockwork mod. Where can I find the terminology for all of this. Its the same feeling I get when I first came to this forum and people are talking about flashing bricks and whatnot. Is rooting permanate? or do I have to reroot everytime I flash a different rom. Ive seen that you have to wipe data and cache. Some threads over here and xda mention rooting as not being permenate... If seen the videos and read the stickies but there is alot of questions unanswered. |
Re: Bought My Epic... Here I come people!
Flashing Tools:
Odin - This is what samsung uses to flash phones with..when flashing roms with it, its complete wipe. Clockworkmod - Flashes from SD card, flashes everything except unofficial modems...There are two versions..3.0 if you want to use EXT4, or 2.5.5 if you want to use RFS..root is bundled with clockwork mod..but you can root without it too.. File systems: RFS - Default filesystem..its slow...but some like to keep to it as EXT4 was not really made for flash media.. EXT4 - The popular filesystem that makes the phone run smoother..mostly when making use of I/O.... Journaling On - This is slower but your data is more reliable (suggested) Journaling Off - This is faster but if you don't know how to take care of it, it can cause complete data loss/corruption Roms: DI18 - Latest official Eclair aka 2.1 rom EC05 - Latest official Froyo aka 2.2.1 rom EE03 - Latest beta Gingerbread aka 2.3.3 rom Now here is how it works... First letter is the year.. D=2010 E=2011 Second letter is the month: A=Jan B=Feb C=Mar D=Apr E=May F=Jun and etc.. last 2 digits are the date.. so.... EC05 = 2011, march 05 EE03 = 2011, may 03 And thats how you know how new each rom is.. Root is permanent..while there are ways to attain temp root its kinda meaningless... |

Im looking betweenSwiss Cheese Samsprint" EE03 Rom [ROM][ACS][STOCK] "Swiss Cheese Samsprint" EE03 :: GPS/GTalk video/voice fix! :: 5/16 - xda-developers over at xda Or the [ROM][ACS]SyndicateROM Frozen 1.1.1 fully loaded. Can anyone recommend which to get. Does the syndicate rom have working netflix or call with video that the EE03 rom has. Which is more better? I know with roms its alot of user preference but in overall stability speed and use. Are there any major differences in features. Thanks |
Re: Bought My Epic... Here I come people!
ACS is probably more stable...since its based on EC05...
For Froyo we have source code and people have been developing/optimizing it for a longer time. No netflix though.. EE03 is based on a beta leak, so no source code...(not saying that its not stable, just keep in mind its based on a beta, uses RFS and it doesn't have a custom kernel..though it does have Hummingbird optimizations as its a GB rom...) |

I know I'm late but welcome modmyppc. Gten's post regarding samsung android dev was good I learned something and I'm using a different Sam droid. But anyway enjoy your new ppc. |
Re: Bought My Epic... Here I come people!
I think my computer is a 32 bit it doesn't say in the start menu/computer/properties/general shouldnt it say it in there?.. Im running windows xp.
I tried connecting my phone the orange light comes up but when I enable usb debuging it doesn't say it in the taskbar. Shouldn't it say it. My computer also doesn't recognize that something is connected I:ve tried connecting the usb cable to each usb port on the laptop and it doesn't say usb debugging on the phone. when I connect it. I got the cable from a wall charger I was using it had a usb adapter the 32 bit driver I have was an application the 64 bit is just a zip file. How do I install that? |

LOL Can you link one that you know works. Also I rooted the phone!:headbang: But now I have to transfer the rom to the sdcard. For that I connected the phone to the computer and turned on mass storage however my laptop needs drivers for it and I can't find them. Is there another way to access the sdcard on the phone to transfer the files |
Re: Bought My Epic... Here I come people!
I am running the swiss cheese rom
Thanks gten for all your help! |
Re: Bought My Epic... Here I come people!
I usually buy my cables through meritline...
I see you got it figured out..but for future reference: 1) If you disable usb debug mode, you dont need drivers for mass storage 2) you can take out the sd card into an adapter and plug it into the laptop (90% of laptops have sd card adapters)..or use your TP2 if you still have one... |

2. My sdcard adapter on my laptop is broken. ----------------------- things are starting to clear up but still have a few cob webs in there I used OneClickRootCWM3.0.2.5-EC05 flashed gingerbread and flashed the modem EE03 If I want to go to syndicate rom or any ext4 rom based phone I have to use OneClickRootCWM3-EB13 right (which can be found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=897612)? CWM 3.0.2.5 is for RFS & CWM 3.0.0.6 is for EXT4 right? But why root? CWM roots your phone and installs CWM on your phone at the same time right? Is there another CWM that works with EXT4? Im on an EE03 Modem the thread says you should be on ECO5 The modem doesn't matter does it? Odin is only used to flash modems because it needs to be a .tar file correct? |

1. Boot into CWM 3.0.2.5 2. (do I have to wipe cache 3x?) 3. flash zip from sd card RFS2EXT4.zip (from here:Rfs2Ext4 and Ext42Rfs CWM 3.0.25 flashable zips - xda-developers) 4. if I flash the conversion script rfs2ext4 then I shouldn't reboot right because the swiss cheese rom is rfs? What will happen to my phone? Stuck in a boot loop or brick it? 5. (do I have to wipe cache 3x) 6. Flash New ext4 rom 7. Reboot from CWM Should I at any point should do a factory reset from CWM? Should I do that when flashing between roms like we did in winmo? Side note: What is the purpose of wiping data 3x? When should I do it flashing themes roms? Whats the alternative to just flash the new ext4 rom? Odin to stock? Whats stock is that rfs or ext4? and if gingerbread and the stock rom are both rfs why can't I just Go into CWM 3.0.2.5 do a factory reset and/or wipe data 3x and flash the new rom which is ext4? Wont CWM convert the phone from rfs to ext4? Quote:
I know it doesn't seem like it but Im making serious progress with android. Im not so intimidated anymore but progressed to cautious. :D Thanks again! |

Personally I dont really wipe 3x unless there is an issue..so dont worry about that too much..I think some roms even do the wiping for you.. Quote:

Is there another way to jumping between rfs to ext4 without the conversion I posted in last post. Btw are those steps correct? Quote:
You said as long as the new rom has a kernal then its to ok to go from an rfs rom to a ext4 rom right? An ext4 rom would have to have a kernal in it because stock is RFS so to flash the rom that rom would have to have that conversion built in wouldn't it? Maybe ill just forget about it and flash the dam conversion and forget about it. Thanks again, Im going to be so smart! haha [/QUOTE] |

IF your familiar with PCs..the ONLY way to change file systems is to format your partition/hard drive. So here is what the script does: 1) makes a backup of your data to sd card 2) formats your partition on your phone to EXT4 erasing ALL data on your phone. 3) restores your data onto the new EXT4 partition. there is no way around it :/ |

Re: Bought My Epic... Here I come people!
I just bought my new epic and I flashed the swiss cheese rom before I activated it.
When Sprint went to go activate it We kept on getting an error 67 registration error. I flashed straight from stock just like what was done on the video. Do I have to activate my phone prior to flashing roms? Should this be an issue? Can someone help me Im kind of stuck here now? I will try to odin back to stock but I can't until my cable comes in the mail friday. Does anyone have any solutions. Me and the sprint rep dialed the ##3282# number. When we went to go to edit msl we kept on getting an invalid lock key. I dont remember what exactly we typed into the msl box. Can anyone help me? Thanks |
Re: Bought My Epic... Here I come people!
Gten,
Im curious can you flash a ef02 modem on a ec05 rom. Also Does doing a wipe data/factory reset, remove things like a custom kernal or modem. And the rom installs them? Would a rom overide a kernal or modem on the previous rom? Could that cause any problems? What is the proper procedure? Also Going from an ECo5 to an EF02 rom will be fine as long as I use CWM3.1.0.1 because it converts the files for me right? |
