rooting-drivers-new roms-HELP

k so here i am sitting here with my stock epic from sprint. great, love it. but theres more out there.
iv read all the guides and "one click" roots and clockwork things. this android crap is frusturatingly complicated and im tryin real hard not to mess anything up.
i am no nOoB.... iv had WM fones for years and have daveled into many roms and kitchens.
WHY cant anyone seem to put together a step-by-step..manual? directions? on how to do this like puttin the viper rom on here... go here download this and that.... drivers and such? its too easy to brick these things.
like i said... im no noob... when it comes to windows mobile...
somone thats had luck rooting and puttin a new rom on there epic might be able to help a guy out? ](*,) alot of people goin from WinMo to the android are just as confused as i am on how to upgrade and get rid of all the sprint junk... sprint nascar? really? get real sprint...

OH and anyone elese had the notification light go out? no SMS/MMS light... only the blue charge complete light works... wtf

Most of the time you would soft brick not hard brick, Odin would allow you to restore your phone 99% of the time...

Clockworkmod = flash roms via recovery (no pc involved)
Odin = This is what Samsung uses to flash phones with (pc involved)
ADB = Allows PC to control your phone
Root = Give you access to modify the file system

Just out of curiosity..what exactly did you not understand about the wiki? based on the feedback I'll see what I can do about making a guide.

you think rooting this thing is hard, check out the evo. im not even kidding when i say that their 1click root requires 68 steps each with multiple substeps. its rediculous.

I was also a WM guy before I got my EVO and now I'm on to the Epic. Rooting these things is cake. I had to do soooo much more to flash a custom ROM on WM and then their was a REAL possibility of bricking. As gTen said it's almost impossible to brick a android device permanently through flashing.

The biggest thing is make sure you have the Samsung drivers installed and that when you plug your phone in they're working right. No yellow ? under device manager.

I would wait a little while on Froyo. I did put the Epic experience of Froyo on but it was a pain in the ass. A easier way will come along once we get the official update. Also froyo isn't all that. It's like a minor minor upgrade. I would not in anyway call it a new OS more of a service pack that adds a few things.

Anyways if you have any problems during rooting just let us know and most people here would be more than happy to walk you through or give you some pointers.

do you have an app called superuser in your app drawer?
the most current 1click installs that for you. thats a good way to check.
or try to d/l a root required app from the marketplace such as adfree or titanium backup.

Re: rooting-drivers-new roms-HELP

Just rooted for the first time last night, and it all clicked. I spent weeks researching the terms involved and the steps you need to take, and after every marathon research session I came to the conclusion that rooting was not for me, too complicated too risky. The information always seemed just a notch above my head, with no clear and simple breakdown of the concepts involved.

Then I just dove in. All the research paid off, I began to see what it all meant, all the terms and slang and whatnot.

It's tricky because I don't like to do this stuff without having a clear understanding, but you can't really get a clear understanding without doing it. So I guess my advice for your first root is: DO YOUR RESEARCH, GO SLOW, and DON'T PANIC

Noober question... and i am not completely retarded i get the concept of this whole mod but my dumbass juat cant get my puter to see my phone. Could it be because i have a hacked version of vista with no service packs?
