I have the stock kernal and I used method #2. I did exactly what you recommended and got the results I posted above.
Were there any errors in command prompt? like maybe it failed to flash something and etc..

The try-run-first failed, so I ran the try-run last and it seemed to install just fine. There was a pause for abut a minute but then it started back up and installed just fine. Then I was stuck.....
