Re: Former TP2 users thoughts on the Epic
I swapped from a TP2 to an Epic, and handed my TP2 to my son to replace his TP. We both say we miss our old keyboards. Go figure. I think we'll both get used to our new ones. Son's upgrade is up soon, and he's trying to decide between an Android and a new Windows Phone.
My biggest issue is that I can't satisfactorily sync up with Outlook. I still use Outlook for business reasons. I could use Samsung's Kies software, but it doesn't work with CDMA phones, not to mention that Sprint disabled the Kies function from the phone. I have all my email synced up with a Gmail account, and put a reply-to address as my main email account. However, if someone replies to an email I send from my phone then it goes to the Gmail account and not my main email account. I have this same problem on my Android tablet, so I guess it's a Gmail issue rather than a phone issue. Still, it's frustrating, though not a deal breaker. Juice Defender has helped with my battery life - a lot. The AMOLED screen - ZOMG! I'm in love. I think the touch screen could be more responsive, though. Maybe a firmware update will fix that? |
Re: Former TP2 users thoughts on the Epic
that is one thing that pisses me off... my gmail account only sends from my gmail address and not one of the other 10 addresses I can use through the webpage.

Well I took the plunge and went with the epic4g, coming from the tp2. After a few days playing with this thing I would suggest doing the same. the phone is just great, to be honest. I have been using wm for a number of years and HTC devices with a physical keyboard as well. So coming to android with a new keyboard design is interesting indeed. Here are some of my reasons why I beleve making the move from the tp2 to the epic4g is the natural progression for any serious ppc geek. These are the things I have noticed from the time I got the device until now, in this short time with the epic4g.
1) the feel fo the phone is actually solid, contrary to the gripes of others. yes the phone is light compared to the evo and tp2, but this is a welcomed defference and not something that detracts from the phone. technology improvements develop towards two common themes, smaller & lighter. the epic4g fits right in this mode with smaller internals of quality hardware. the argument of it feeling cheap and too light is similar to the person who thinks the heavier desktop or laptop is better than the smaller and lighter laptop that is sooped up with the newest tech. so a big + here. 2) the screen is absolutely beautiful and in reality, it is big as well. I initially thought the tp2 was only a tad smaller, but the difference in screen size & the super amoled goodness will make you think that you were suffering with the tp2, lol. the screen is just in another entire planet from the tp2. + here as well. 3) I now realize that I was suffering with the tp2 lagging, bolack screen of death, freezing up, and many other issues that we hbad to resolve and complain about to know end. the epic is what I call a "good out the box" device. tbis thing is fast, no lags so far, no black sscreen of death, or any of the issues that made me wanna just go phoneless with the tp2 and its predecessors. simply put, the epic4g is what u wanted the tp2 to be...and what htc should have made from functioning to design. you want ur phone to work....this one does, despite what critics say. nothing is perfect, but the epic4g is closer to perfection than any of the others in this regard. HUGE + 4) the keyboard is similar in color scheme to the tp2 and some of the setup...but it ain't the tp2 keyboard. is it better or worse, id say neither at this point. its just different with lots of similarities. the main thing for me is that the fonction keys are different andthe placement of the shift, function, and spacebar buttons are gonna take some getting used to. that being said I can just about type a full paraghraph without looking at the keyboard and only starring at the screen, something I had lots of difficulty doing with the tp2. in fact about all of this post is done from the physical keyboard and I truly believe the ability to do so is huge. the keyboard feels really natural and I think the only real issue is that I have years of using an htc keyboard to break out of. + for epic4g :-) 5) I'm pleased to announce that I am an app junkie! I have found all the apps and programs I want with this device. from banking to gaming...I got it. wm frankly sucked in this department. I can litterally spend hours in the app market and searching the internet for apps its addictive and wish for no cure. the tp2 would sometimes struggle to handle .cabs or they were poorly designed, or just too plain looking with no modern imagination. android is fresh and new, solid apps, that the epic just runs with no hiccups. I'm doing with my epic out the box what I would have dreamed to do with the best roms for tp2. Huge+ 6) much better BT than the tp2. I use a2dp in both my headsets (s9 & bt530, formerly bt 8050) and can tell you that the BT connection is much stronger and better with the epic4g. + here 7) seidio case & holster combo. I include this because I could never really find something that was really good for the tp2. not so with the epic4g. the seidio case adds very little to the size, while giving you the "feel" that the device is protected and more solid. + here 8) one of my main concerns with changing to android was the percieved loss of the ability to edit ms word and excel docs. well, that went away as I installed and used the full version of "documents to go". HUGE ++ 9) the battery life, well....it sucks. I have juice defender and other task killers to help with this. I'm hoping that thbis is something that gets rectified. tp2 is definitely better here and epic4g gets a giant - in this area. I have yet to root or do anything other than work with the stock, which I do with all my phbones until I have a big reason to mess with it. I can't wait to see how froyo effects this phone. but right now my tp2 is sitting on my desk waitin to be sold on craigslist... sorry for the run on, but I just had to shout some epic love & support. Sent from my Epic 4g using Tapatalk Pro. |
Re: Former TP2 users thoughts on the Epic
Didn't have a TP2 - but going from my TP to the Epic was a challenge in a few areas.
The largest problem was losing ActiveSync/Windows Mobile Device Center to synchronize my Outlook e-mail, contacts, calendar and tasks. Android supports either using Google or Exchange server for e-mail, contacts & calendar - no synchronization out-of-the-box with Outlook client. For me, the solution that worked best was to get a Hosted Exchange server account - and use it to host all of my other e-mail accounts. And now my Epic works great for e-mail, contacts & calendar - actually seems to be working better than my TP did with Outlook. To solve the tasks synchronization, I'm using DataViz's RoadSync - to only sync tasks. With the larger display and better performance and now full access to my e-mail, contacts, calendar & tasks - the Epic is a huge improvement over my TP (and probably a TP2). |
Re: Former TP2 users thoughts on the Epic
I went from a tp2 to epic also. Had the tp2 sice it came out. At first I liked the phone but once I updatedto 6.5 and all the lag started I hated it. Had to soft reset about everyday. Now that I mad the change I love the epic.
At first the keyboard was some getting used to. I wish it had the fn indiactor and shift indicator. I don't like wwere some of the fh keys r at. U just have to get used to it. Also while I was typing this some of the keys don't show up. U have to go back and put them in. I don't know why it does that. I miss the tilt screen too. Other than that everything to me Is an upgrade. Its super fast. U know what its going to do when u press the back key. On tp2 everytime I pressed the backkey it will take me back to home other the last page which was a pain. The battery indicator seems to be alittle off. It sems to drain super fast wonce ur at 1 bar. But at the end of the day I'm glad I made the change. |

Re: Former TP2 users thoughts on the Epic
I look at these phones the same way I look at cars. My first smart phone was the HTC Touch Pro, and I thought it was the coolest phone ever. My first car was a 1972 Ford Pinto, and I thought it was soooooooooo cool that I even had a car. Later, I moved up to the Touch Pro 2, and I thought it was 100 times better than the TP. Likewise, when I sold my Pinto and bought a 1978 Trans Am, well, the comparison was similar. So now I have the Samsung Epic, and I also have a 2010 BMW 328i. Again, the comparisons are about the same. Looking back at the TP2, it pales in comparison to the Epic, just as my old Trans Am pales in comparison to my BMW. There are some things that can correlate from one to the other...the Trans Am is a sports car, as is the BMW. The TP2 is a smart phone, as is the Epic. But in both cases the comparisons pretty much stop there. The Epic is so much better than the TP2 that I think the 1978 Trans Am / 2010 BMW 328i analogy pretty much sums it up.
Now, the question is when the Galaxy S2 comes out, just what car am I going to have to buy? The Mercedes Benz SLR McLaren? JB |
