drivers dont seem to install correctly for me. Setup.exe works fine. I just get an error after plugging in the phone. The device shows up under "unspecified" yet it shows D700. Weird.

I notice they are both x64 links for the drivers. I am running 64 bit but wanted to try and root on my roomates 32 bit.

I'll modify that in a minute..while you can find 32bit drivers in the Epic 4g Wiki.

Also for 64bit, when you plug it in are you in debug mode? and does it start installing drivers?

Yes I am in debug mode, and yes it shows the drivers installing. Takes forever then finally gets the red X and says error installing.

here's a screenshot. I left it sitting there for 30 minutes to install the driver and i had to go to work so i had to unplug it finally.

I think it would just sit there forever saying "Installing Driver" with the box and the little green circle animation on it...

With your device plugged in go into device manager and click to install the driver and then pick manually browse..its in the USB Drivers\16_Shrewsbury folder of the extracted drivers.

Can you tell a big difference with the custom ROMs and do you lose Samsung Widgets with custom?

If the rom has TouchWiz/Stock then you can use Samsung widgets...if its ASOP then no.

Each custom rom details changes..like some overclock to 1.4ghz..others just preload apps such as Youtube HD and wifi tether and remove sprint bloatware.

installs custom recovery into your phone.
You can flash all the roms and updates this way and it's very simple to install and to use.

Kkeep in mind that you would have to use qwerty keyboard enter key for enter.

Hope this helps.

Um, I'm kind of a noobie to all of this and have a few questions.....
My phone is rooted as of a couple of weeks ago. No problems.

1. When the updates come from Sprint, do I have to "unroot" the phone?
2. Should I switch over to this newer "rooting" method? If so, do I need to unroot it first?
3. How do you "unroot" the phone, anyway?
4. If I flash a different ROM onto it, can I restore with Titanium or will I have to manually restore the apps and data?
5. Anyone got Froyo working on this phone yet?

1. some updates do, you should check the forums before updating.
2. either manual or one click root are the same.
3. you can restore your phone back to stock using Odin 3 but I think there is a 1 click unroot.
4. I believe TB needs an update. I wont relay on it for now, lots of people reporting problems restoring apps.
5. no froyo leak yet

I've tried installing this countless of times with no luck. I rooted my phone without an issue a few weeks back & finally wanted to give this a try so I could flash a custom rom. However, I keep getting the same message that elboriqua176 has described a couple posts back. I am obviously doing something wrong but I cannot figure it out for the life of me. It seems the more I read the more I am lost on what to try next??? Am I the only one that can't get this to work? This is my first Android phone (was using TP2) so a lot of the is quite foreign to me.

If anyone cares to respond, assume that I know nothing (as I stated so obviously above) lol

Thanks for everyones help in this community!!!

When you plug it in, and go to device manager..did all the drivers load? also when you ran it did you use run-try-first.bat or run-try-last.bat?

Thanks for your reply! I will look into this when I get home from work & report back. I did try to run both run-try-first.bat & run-try-last.bat but no luck. Just so I'm clear, when you say to check the device manager to see if the drivers have been loaded, is that located inside the Start/Control Panel/Device manager?

yes..when the device is plugged in USB debug mode, a few devices should appear...make sure all of them have their drivers installed correctly. Should be like 4 of them.

OK, there were two items in the device manager so I tried to reinstall the drivers...let it run for about 45 minutes & 3 ouf 4 installed then I stopped it. I ran the run-try-first (didn't take) then ran the run-try-last (didn't take) tried the run-try-first again. I think it worked, (well at least I got a different response than before) but how can I check to know for sure?

I cant get this installed. It seems to start out ok but after it reboots from when it says wait 60 seconds this is what I get:
rm failed for /sdcard/zImage Permission denied
rm failed for /data/local/tmp/rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin no such file or directory.
rm failed for /data/local/root.sh no such file or directory

Any ideas?

Reset the phone while holding vol down + camera + Power during the entire time till it boots into recovery. (it should be green text).

if it doesnt work, try installing the 4th driver via device manager manually.

The other option is to flash a kernal which supports it via odin and get it with Rom Manager.
