i don't believe so. sprint only requires that if you buy the phone from them. a simple esn swap should put your current plan on the hero.

That may depend on your plan, but they wouldnt activate the Hero I bought for my wife without updating her plan. She had the $30 SERO plan, so I dont know if they made up update since she had one of the old SERO plans. I would call sprint and ask. Her $30 SERO plan went to the new $60 SERO plan. Basically doubled our monthly bill for the same plan we already had.

It's definitely possible that they may want to get rid of the $30 sero plans and do something like that.

They may also require you to just get a data-pack add-on to allow it to be used. It will really depend most on who you talk to when you're trying to activate it.
