Downtime Tonight - 1/19/10

As you may have noticed, we were down for a few hours tonight.

At first the site was being redirected to a warez/hacker site, then I shut down the webserver until things were fixed.

Some plugins/features may not work until I can do some file edits in the next couple of hours, but the site is back up now.

The cause? A zero-day exploit that was in vBulletin before they patched it. We've installed patches the same day they are released, but usually the exploit exists before its actually patched, so we got taken advantage of before they released the patch. It hit quite a few other forums back in December too, including SprintUsers and Neowin. Just do a Google search for "dupedb hacked" and you'll see all the results.

and when that was happening, I just happened to install a piece of software that I thought was causing the problem, I'm glad to know it wasn't that software!

lol, i didnt know what to do when it happed... i was just browsing the forums and just about to quote someone when the redirecting started... i quickly consulted my good friend google and tweeted to the ppcg twitter account what was happening, i tired to help :-/
