Thumbs up Omnia Passes Unplanned Durability Test

I couldn't believe it, and I was yelling at everyone. It was Sunday morning, and I had left my Omnia on the back of my daughter's car to obtain a GPS fix before my morning run (I have GPS Trainer Pro installed - a nifty little program that monitors your running and other stuff). I had then gone back into the house to...ah...work on the crossword in the bathroom for a few minutes.

You can guess what happened next. When I finished, I discovered the car was gone from the driveway. Unbeknownst to me, my daughter was meeting a friend at a neighorhood coffee shop that morning for a visit. My wife called her, but my daughter hadn't seen the phone when she left and didn't know where it was. So I jumped into my own car and started to trace her route.

There it was in a busy intersection about 2 miles from the house, face up in the middle of a lane of oncoming traffic. I was in the left turn lane waiting for the signal, and sat there helplessly as I watched a car run directly over it. I figured it was toast. How many cars had it been?

I made my turn, parked, then ran out and retrieved it. To my astonishment, there wasn't a scratch on it. I had put a silicone skin on the body, so that did offer some protection. And because it was face up, the pavement hadn't marred the screen. S2U2 came up as I punched the button. Everything seemed to be working just fine.

I had dodged a bullet. I began to wonder if it had actually been run over, but when I went to plug in the charger - the plug wouldn't fit. I had to pry the port open a wee bit. The only other issue I've come across was the screen alignment had shifted up a millimeter or so, but that was adjusted back without a hitch. No other issues have come to light.

All I can say is this is one tough little phone.

Dang, I guess my plan to "accidentally" run over my phone and break it to convince my wife to let me get the Omnia II when it comes out won't work...

We'll just have to come up with another excuse, I mean "reason", to buy the Omnia II.

Just for fun, attached is an Excel spreadsheet comparing the hottest phones out or nearly out: The HTC Imagio, HTC Touch Pro 2, Samsung Omnia, and Samsung Omnia II. Feature for feature, Omnia II is the ticket. Enjoy!

Re: Omnia Passes Unplanned Durability Test

I dropped my first Omnia in the ocean. I disassembled it immediately and let everything dry. It actually would power on and the screen would come up like it was OK. The buttons, touch-screen and ringer no longer worked. The Power button actually still worked, though.

What truly surprised me was that I could call and the screen lit up and showed the incoming call. It still worked!!! I just had no way to answer the call. Now that's a rugged phone!
