as far as i can tell, no, but without an omnia in hand to really test with, i cant be sure. The gsm omnia is what i am going by, and they dont need an unlocked bootloader, but VZW could have changed that factor

I like the Omnia better then the VzW TP and no no unlocker is needed for samsungs but u better be very careful since there is no bootloader.

Re: VZW Omnia Kitchen Thread

I am a proud new owner of the Omnia 1910, coming from the 6700. I abused the 30 day policy trying out the diamond and the touch pro via sprint.

I was almost settled in with the pro until my employer(US largest cable provider) announced to their employees that all company mobile devices(sprint) will be replaced with new devices and accesories from Verizon all existing numbers will be ported over by end of first quarter.

At that point I realized with my provider losing such a large account and my corp. discount soon to be snatched away. Tme to give verizon a try. I was offered an employee discounted plan and they had the new pro that I favored. I recieved the HTC PRO batardized step-child and immediately swapped it out the Omnia.

I am a dedicated pupil to this site and wanted to introduce myself to the dedicated talent in this thread.

I respect your hard work and effort to improve the experience of these great devices.

I seen some of you around the community (modaco/xda-dev) and have had no problem donating when in need.=D>

Just wanted to say thanks!

Oh by the way I am one of those jerks who takes down your broadband in the middle of the night! LOL

I upgrade the fiber optic network, it's for a good cause DOCSIS 3.0 coming to you cable internet subscribers soon!

Re: VZW Omnia Kitchen Thread

OK thanks to some anonoumous poster in this forum...I gave up on the Touch Pro.

I tried to order it yesterday but it was OUT OF STOCK....some might call in providence or somebody upstairs looking out for me.

My brother got the VZ Touch Pro this past Wednesday. Finally got a chance to really use it today. It is very sluggish. I'm sure a cooked ROM you might be able to squeeze some more performance out of it......

I will miss the Hardware Keyboard and the VGA screen......but that doesnt trump a non functioning device.

The Specs on the Omnia are impressive - nice 8GB onboard RAM - fast CPU. Unlocking the GPS is on the list and of course PLAYING IN THE KITCHEN !

Now I read that the omnia does not have a bootloader and that makes flashing ROM's more scary....why is that? It's been 6 months since I was tossing kitchen ROM's on my Sprint Touch so I am a tad rusty.

So HELLO to you all!

Re: VZW Omnia Kitchen Thread UPDATE 12/13/08

I just got a VZW OMNIA because of GPS function. As I have found out in the last week, VZW has locked this function. This is bad on their part because for the first time in 6 years, I'm thinking about switching carrier to ATT. Keep up the good work guys and hopefully our community can find a fix.

Update 12/9/08: Ive been working on building a rom, but have run into a couple problems that i'm looking into. wont have a rom up tonight guys
Update 12/13/08: I finally got my omnia today. The stock rom isnt as bad as i thought it would be, its actually pretty quick. The kitchen is giving me one huge error with inserting the imgfs partition into the rom, and i have yet to recieve help, as the tools i am using are made for the gsm omnia, and it looks like the partition checksums might be different. Still investigating this issue, but at the moment im just bent on customizing the omnia as much as possible with just the stock rom. The guys over at modaco.com might have GPS unlocked within the next couple of days without a custom rom, so that would be one major win over needing a custom rom.

Update 12/14/08: Here is a link to the kitchen that i have been working on, but at the moment it is none functioning. Im updloading it so people can try playing with it, and hopefully someone out there can get it working. http://www.filedropper.com/samsungi90xromkitchen ONCE AGAIN, THIS IS NOT A COMPLETE KITCHEN!

***WARNING*** FLASHING A CUSTOM ROM CAN/MAY/WILL BRICK YOUR DEVICE. I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR WHAT YOU DOWNLOAD ON YOUR DESKTOP OR TRY FLASHING TO YOUR DEVICE.

To-Do list:
Get kitchen made (OEM, SYS, XIP structure) Completed on 12/7/08
Clean up kitchen (remove un-necessary files)
Flash first custom rom on cdma omnia
GPS Unlock
Update XIP, SYS to latest build
Port kitchen for use with ppckitchen.org's buildos

hey is this for the i910 i got the rom you post but it says i908 you got anything for the i910 for verizon

Suscribed........

Im looking to move from my 6800 and I was all about the TP UNTIL it came out. I wasnt thrilled VZW screwed it up so badly. I went and played with teo in the store and even after a reset of the device they seemed so slow.

So I am hoping the Omnia will be a better device. Im a fan of the physical keyboards but I can do an on-screen KB. I used to have a 1st gen iPhone.

weedahoe....I'm with you on the Touch Pro....it seemed even more sluggish that the Storm in the store!!! Now I know it is a totally different story in the store and in the 'real' world, but it certainly doesn't instill confidence in a device!! If you have any questions/concerns, a lot is already covered in the threads here, but feel free to ask, I am a huge fan of the Omnia now!!!!

This is the only thread I have found so far about kitchens and custom ROMs for the Omnia.

Looking for any updates, status reports, progress. I am currently a 6700 and 6800 owner, was looking for the Diamond, but getting tired of waiting, and the Omnia is looking better. Just need reassurance that Custom ROMs and Kitchens are coming soon.

Thanks.

I am not an expert on kitchens + ROMs, but I do know there have been rumors/promises of an update (AKA new ROM version) being released by Samsung + VZW any time within the first half of '09 (more likely in first quarter). When that is released, people can take that and create new ROMs, so it shouldn't be too long.

P.S. I contacted Samsung....no reply yet, I will be asking VZW today, so if I hear anything I will update!!

Not 100% sure we will be able to do custom roms on the omnia yet, even after the update for gps. that could very well just be a cab update...

Re: VZW Omnia Kitchen Thread MOVED

I see what you mean, but I have heard rumors about a full update. There have been other tweaks mentions as well as GPS.

I have contacted both Samsung (they bail and say the carriers release them) and VZW (they say CS + tech support don't hear about one untill the actual release) and nothing new to report!!

Admittedly though I have never used a custom ROM, so I don't know what I'm missing out on!!!!!

Re: VZW Omnia Kitchen Thread MOVED

Custom ROM builders tend to find ways to improve speed and stability, and their ROMs are usually available long before official ROM updates, and usually much cooler. PPCGeeks Kitchens allow all (well, maybe most) of the stuff you currently installed in User memories to be put in the ROM, saving user space. Also, you can leave out what you don't want, and put only what you want into the ROM avoiding useless VZW programs. You can even include personal info built right into the ROM. Hard resets will not remove programs installed into the custom ROM.

However, the programs to be installed in the ROM need to be in OEM format, not CABs. Fortunately, there are people making these OEMs all the time, and a huge assortment of them are made availabe right in the PPCGeeks Kitchen, where you just click on them to select them for your ROM, and then just a few mouse clicks and you build and flash your own ROM, just the way you want it.

I probably won't get an Omnia if there is a good chance custom ROMs won't be available. Kitchen ROMs cooked the way I like them are just too cool.

I hope there is someone in here that can explain what and why the chances of Omnia custom ROMs may be! I know nothing about then, but would like to learn. The odiginal Omnia (i900) has had many custom ROMs and I do know the i900 and i910 are very different devices, but what would make that much of a difference?

Inquiring minds want to know!!!!

The difference is huge. Drivers are different, so that makes the xip different which can cause a lot of problems on a device that most devs/chefs here know close to nothing about. Different radio (gsm vs cdma) and some people have tried to flash a gsm rom over to their phone in hopes it would work (btw it never will. ever. best case it leaves you in bootloader to flash another rom but we dont have a rom to flash with to fix it. worst case is it bricks). And then, all the tools used on the omnia roms to extract/ repack were written by chinese devs and we have no way of contacting them/ source code was not released. So we dont even know if it will work.

well i ran into problems trying to port the kithen for the i900 over to the i910, bricked 3 i910's in the process. all the custom roms for the i900 were made from a released update for the i900. nobody has tried to build a kitchen/ custom rom from a dump made from said device (afaik), and that is exactly what i was attempting.

I have moved to the touch pro for now, but still have the omnia (it is a nice piece of equipment) and will attempt to build a kitchen for it as soon as we get a shipped rom (released from samsung/ vzw) for the fixed gps and so on. Once we have a working kitchen we can attempt to go deeper and hopefully update it to the latest build of windows mobile that is available, and hopefully integrate into the ppckitchen.org buildos.

Re: VZW Omnia Kitchen Thread MOVED

Thanks for all the info angel12, maybe I should have explained better though...I know of the problems of trying to use the i900 ROM with an i910, but the tone earlier indicated a question of being able to cook ROMS even with (as you put it) a shipped ROM. Would there be issues with a shipped ROM stopping the development of custom ones, or is it pretty much a given (as I have thought in the past) that a shipped ROM is all that is needed to start cooking?

Thanks again!!!!

Well, its unanswered as of yet. but im hoping thats all it will take. a shipped rom [should] have a radio and bootloader and everything that is needed for us to make a custom rom. i think a lot of the people that flashed with gsm roms are loading up a new bootloader without knowing it and in that kinda screwing themselves.

We at geeks/xda know next to nothing about samsung roms, so its all kinda trial and error hoping that something works. Ive worken up with an idea in the middle of the night that i had to try right away lol, ended up with bricks by morning :violent2:

Angel I have no intention of Hijacking the subject but I think this is a group where I may get some insights; I have been looking for something similar on the Omnia i910; perhaps you have knowledge of, or you will be able to direct me in the right direction; I am using the i910 on a diferent carrier (MetroPCS) The Phone works properly but so far I have been unable to make the internet and MMS work.
Using qpst 2.7 rev 254 I have been able to modify some settings and make them stik, but The setting for Simple IP as well as the phonenumber@mymetropcs.com keeps on reverting to phonenumber@vzw3g.com (any change on these fields does not stick)
I wonder has anybody been succesful at getting Internet access working on this phone using metropcs or criket? if so can you please share some information that could help me on this?
I heard a sugestion about using samsung universal pst but so far I have been unable to find a version that supports the i910..... Can somebody tell me if this is available? and where? also heard that the i730 & i760 are similar enough, but do not know if this is the case, please coment on that.
I have already configured all the Windows mobile settings on the device following the instructions for the Sprint Mogul (aka htc PPC6800) but suspect that the authentication problem resides on the NV ram of the device itself.
Please post your comments even if it is to say it is not possible to do it yet.
I am willing to pay somebody for services if necesary.
On my omnia, I found that some settings stick some other do not Stick, some are reverted immediately (or perhaps are never written to the phone) like the UM & AM ;and some other are reverted a few minutes later like the simple IP.
Do you think that we have a daemon running on the background like the guardian.exe on the HTC ppc 6800 Mogul (sprint), that rewrites the default settings???
So here you have what I found:
-Mobile Ip profile:
NAI: sticks (current value)=10 digitphonenumber@mymetropcs.com
Tethered NAI: sticks (current value)= Null
MN-HA SPI Hex: sticks (current value)=4D2 Is this your value as well?
MN-AAA SPI Hex: sticks (current value)=4D2 Is this your value as well?
MN-Public Key ID: sticks (current value)=0 Is this your value as well?
-M.IP:
Mobile IP Behavior: Does Not Stick (current Value)=Simple-IP (reverts to Mob+Simp /f/back after a few minutes)
-PPP Config:
AN User ID: Does not Stick (reverts to 10 digitphonenumber@vzw3g.com)
AN Password: Does Not stick (reverts to NULL)
Um User ID: Does not Stick (reverts to 10 digitphonenumber@vzw3g.com)
Um Password: Does Not stick (reverts to NULL)
-DATA:
Service Option: Sticks (current Value)=Pre 707
-APMS:
Access Overload Class: grayed out (Impossible to change and out of range) current Value=51 (Valid Values are 1 to 15) Any comments on this one???
Best regards
Luis

Custom ROMs on the Verizon TP are just SO sweet , would love to be able to do something like that with my Omnia.
